General English
These courses are designed for people aged 16 or older who wish to improve their English language skills for work, school, or social reasons. All students take a placement test on arrival, so you can be sure of being in a group appropriate to your English skills.
General English 15 & 20 (Part-time)
Eight levels from beginning through advanced, designed for people 16 or older. Fifteen lessons of integrated skills (listening. speaking. reading and writing) or add 5 lessons of a focus course (for example: Slang & Idioms, Discussion & Debate, Current Events, Role Play). No F-1 visa required.
General English 25 (Full-time)
Same program as above with the addition of a second focus course. F-1 visa required. Your teachers offer the most effective teaching methods in the profession. For three hours per day (Sessions 1 and 2) you will have a balance of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing to improve all your English skills, plus grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation.
You may then choose to take either one or two Focus courses which will further your study of English in a variety of challenging and interesting areas. These courses may include: Slang & Idioms, Grammar, Business English, Pronunciation, Exam preparation, Vocabulary building, American life and culture, Communication skills, etc.
Cambridge exam courses: PET, FCE, CAE, and CPE / Exam preparation courses for TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, CEJBT
Cambridge Exams Prep (Full-time)
We offer FOE, CAE, and CPE exam preparation courses in a 25-lesson-per-week format. FCE is offered three times per year with start dates in January, March, and September. CAE and CPE are offered twice per year starling in March and September. All courses are 12 weeks long with the exception of the January start FOE course which is 10 weeks. KET and PET preparation are offered through the General English program. F-1 visas normally required.
Course Duration & Information
FCE, CAE, & CPE are 12 weeks — all others are 4 weeks. FCE, CAE, CPE courses are normally closed group. TOEFL and TOEIC are offered as a Focus Course or through the Academic English Requisite Modules. ILETS is offered both through the Academic English Requisite Modules or on a one-day preparatory workshop basis. BEC is offered through the Executive English program. CEELT is offered on a closed group basis through the Teacher Training Department.
University preparation
These courses are designed for people aged 18 or older who need to improve their English language skills for university entrance. Course emphasis is placed on reading, writing, lectures, and note taking. Minimum enrollment is 8 weeks. It takes 8 weeks to complete a level and earn a Certificate of Completion. Our Academic Program provides you with the language skills you will need to be successful at an American University. You must be at the intermediate level before entering the program.
Options: Students must take 25 lessons per week, an additional 5 hours of guided self-study and follow the prescribed program. F-1 visas are required.
Executive/Business English courses
International House Executive Centers train business and professional people from all over the world to communicate effectively in English. For our business clients effective communication means improving your skills in negotiating, making presentations, entertaining foreign clients, proposal writing, and the ability to speak confidently with colleagues in a variety of contexts.
Your trainers will be certified teachers who are also knowledgeable about and interested in the business world. They provide up-to-date training of the highest standard. Courses are firmly based on real-life situations, which is reflected in our choice of training techniques and materials. We help you practice the communication skills you will need in your business and professional life.
