We oArt Schools / Design Collegesffer a broad range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs, post-baccalaureate certificate programs and adult continuing education programs.

Undergraduate Degree Programs:

BA in Visual and Critical Studies
The Bachelor of Arts in Visual and Critical Studies program allows you to pursue art making, researching and analyzing within the expansive environment of an art school and encourages you to recognize the productive relationships between academic and studio disciplines, such as sculpture and geography, design and genetics, and intellectual property law and action figures. This interdisciplinary thesis can be a written work or can take any number of forms, such as hybrid projects that combine written research with video, performance, or web-based work.

Bachelor of Interior Architecture
The BIA program is a set four-year curriculum. In the second through fourth years, the interior architecture progressive design studios are the core of the BIA curriculum. Each class must be fulfilled by taking the class at SAIC or by transfer credit. Classes taken at other schools may not be equivalent in content or credit, and might not be eligible for transfer or for only partial credit. Transfer credit is accepted only at the time of admission.

BFA with emphasis in art education
The BFA with Emphasis in Art Education connects creative expression, theoretical knowledge, everyday experiences, and social critique through studio, art history, liberal arts, and professional education classes. The professional education curriculum includes education seminars, pre-clinical field experiences, and apprentice teaching. The education seminars provide common ground for students to exchange ideas, build relationships, develop curriculum, and confront critical issues in art education. Students explore the purpose and function of art education and investigate connections between experiences inside and outside of public schooling within a larger framework of cultural and historical analysis. In this sense, the educational seminars help students understand art, education, and curricula as both products of history and potential sites for cultural change.

BFA with emphasis in art history theory and criticism
The Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Art History, Theory, and Criticism affords students the ability to develop their studio practice while at the same time obtaining an in-depth knowledge of art history, theory, and criticism. Studio classes make up approximately half of the curriculum, and students are also required to complete thirty-nine credits of art history which include the senior seminar and thesis classes. The art history classes include traditional studies in art history with a focus on modern and contemporary art.

BFA with emphasis in writing
The Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Writing encourages wide-ranging exploration of writing in multiple genres, as well as interdisciplinary work, hybrid work, hypertextual work, and text that explores the intermediary realm between visual art and language. Credits are dispersed across a variety of classes: a Contemporary Practices course, a two-semester Literary Survey, multi-genre Workshop and Advanced Workshops, as well as ample elective credits in both Studio and Liberal Arts. The capstone experience in the BFA-W’s curriculum is a three semester seminar sequence: the Generative Seminar, and UG Thesis for BFA-W Seminar. The seminar sequence is designed to deepen each student’s individual aesthetic concerns, combining in-depth reading across a variety of topics with intensive creative output and feedback.

Consecutive degree option for BFA and BA in visual and critical studies
Students interested in earning both a BFA and the BA in Visual and Critical Studies can pursue them consecutively, with the option of using the majority of credits from the first program to complete the second. Either degree can be completed first, with a minimum residency of 36 hours to complete the second. Admission to either degree qualifies students for participation in the second degree program. Students interested in this option should meet with the Chair of the VCS department to develop a plan for completing the coursework for both degrees.
