Why learning Portuguese is a great goal: Between 170 and
210 million people speak Portuguese throughout the world
and is the official language of seven countries: Angola,
Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal,
and São Tomé and Príncipe islands. In 1986, Portuguese
became an official language in the European Union (EU).
The Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP in
Portuguese) was created in 1996 with the purpose to
increase cooperation and cultural exchanges among the
member countries, and to create a uniform Portuguese
standard and to further spread the language. Portuguese
has significant similarities with Mirandese, Catalan,
Italian, French and with other Romance languages.
