Private Boarding School for Girls in Dallas, Texas

The Hockaday School:
The Hockaday School in Dallas, TX, established in 1913 by Miss Ela Hockaday and a group of concerned parents, provides an outstanding college preparatory education for girls in grades 8 through 12 (boarding); and Pre-K through 12 (day). The boarding experience at The Hockaday School is unique and unlike any other you will find. Originally founded as a boarding school, Hockaday has kept its boarding community small and intimate within a school population that has grown to over 1,000 students.

Lower School:
Recognizing that each child is a unique human being with individual needs and interests, the Lower School strives to help each girl develop her potential by providing programs designed to fit her own style of learning. These needs and interests are met through hands-on experiences in math and science, problem solving in cooperative learning activities, and a reading and writing program which combines a literature-based and phonetic approach. Through these and other techniques planned with girls in mind, our students learn that they have the ability to solve problems, to ask questions, to make discoveries, and to find answers for themselves. In so doing they build a strong foundation for developing self-confidence and a positive self-esteem.

Middle School:
The Middle School curriculum reaches for a balance academically, socially, physically, and Boarding Schools / IB Collegesmorally and is based on the wide variety of developmental changes found in our students between grades five and eight.  Hockaday fosters an ethical framework in our students that includes both personal and community responsibility. Emphasis is placed upon critical and analytical thinking skills and individual expression in each discipline. The students look to their teachers as facilitators to guide them as they learn the value of cooperation and technology throughout the student-centered curriculum. The middle school technology program is a project-based curriculum with emphasis in Fine Arts. Community Service is an integral part of middle school student life.

Upper School:
At Hockaday, we seek to develop young women who can help initiate and guide the direction of our rapidly changing society rather than merely respond to changes set forth by others. In order to accomplish this, we must nurture the vision, independence, and courage of our young women.  In preparing citizens for a democratic society, we seek to teach students to be discerning in the recognition of truth and to be responsible to both themselves and to the greater community. Finally, we want to engender in our girls a love of life and of learning.
