Photo of University of British Columbia in Vancouver, CanadaTeaching and research at UBC are conducted in 12 faculties and 11 schools, with each offering a broad range of programs of study. Other academic opportunities include co-op learning, in which studies are combined with real-world work experience, and exchange programs, which allow students to spend one or two terms at a foreign university.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies offers a wide range of options for master's and doctoral students. We offer students an intellectually challenging education through programs that are international in scope, interactive in process and interdisciplinary in content and approach.

This is one of the few faculties in North America with a strong focus on interdisciplinary work. At UBC, studying at the graduate level means liberation from the tight constraints of discipline and department.

UBC's Centre for Teaching and Academic Growth offers programs to enhance teaching skills for faculty and graduate students and many UBC faculties and schools also provide opportunities for continuing professional education -- UBC's Continuing Studies and Office of Learning Technology (Distance Learning) offers courses, workshops, seminars and certificate programs to both on- and off-campus learners.

Faculties and schools include Agricultural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Arts, Dentistry, Education, Forestry, Human Kinetics, Law, Medicine, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Science, School of Business, Music, Nursing, Social Work & Family Studies.

The Department of Housing and Conferences provides accommodation for more than 8,000 students, faculty and staff in the eight residence complexes that circle our beautiful Vancouver campus. Our goal is to provide an environment that helps students to succeed, both academically and socially. Vancouver is the largest city in Western Canada, located at the southwestern corner of the province of British Columbia. Situated between the North Shore and coastal mountains and the edge of the Pacific ocean, Vancouver is one of North America's most beautiful cities, and was recently ranked as "the world's most desirable place to live" in a survey of 127 cities performed by the Economist magazine's Intelligence Unit.

In 2010, the city will host the world, as the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games come to Vancouver / Whistler-Blackcomb.

The vibrant downtown core offers all of the amenities of an international destination -- from hundreds of restaurants and clubs, to countless parks and recreation facilities, to world-class entertainment and sporting events (including the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the Canucks, the city's major league hockey team). UBC's downtown campus, UBC Robson Square, is also located in the heart of the city.

Vancouver's natural surroundings offer limitless opportunities for outdoor pursuits, such as hiking and mountain biking in the spring and summer, and skiing at nearby Whistler-Blackcomb resort in winter.
