Health Care Administration Managers are leaders
involved in the planning, supervising and
coordinating of healthcare services. Over
100,000 people work in this area in the U.S.
alone. Health Administration Managers work in
positions from middle management to CEO’s of
large hospitals. Most health managers work in
the public sector for health departments, but
some work for the private sector for insurance
companies, pharmaceutical companies or on a
consultancy basis.
Health Administrators can specialize in a
certain area or work as general managers who
manage entire facilities consisting of many

Education:
There are many ways to get a career in Health
Administration / Management. The most direct way
is to complete a Master’s degree program in
health management. Some students continue to
study for Doctoral Degrees to gain entry into
more senior positions.
Master’s degree programs generally last two
years. A Bachelor’s Degree in a related area is
required to gain admittance to a Master’s Degree
program. Subjects covered in a Master’s Degree
program include: healthcare policy and law,
organizational behavior, marketing, healthcare
financing, human resources, and other healthcare
management topics. Courses may also include an
internship, residency, or fellowship.
Once you graduate with your master’s degree you
can apply to an entry/mid level position
depending on your area of expertise and
experience. Specialized areas where health
administrators work include: Finance, Government
relations, Human resources, Information systems,
Marketing and public affairs, Material
management (purchasing of equipment and
supplies), Medical staff relations, Nursing
administration, Patient care services, Planning
and development. Entry level salaries start at
around $40,000 and experienced Health
Administration Managers can earn well in excess
of $200,000 for high level jobs.
Accreditation:
When choosing a Health administration program,
first ensure that the program you choose has the
proper accreditation. The American College of
Healthcare Executives (ACHE) provides
accreditation for many Health Administration
programs. Members of ACHE can become board
certified in healthcare management as an ACHE
Fellow (FACHE). This high achievement is proof
of your skills and knowledge.
