Healthcare Employment Areas:
The healthcare industry includes everything from
small town private practices of physicians to
busy hospitals that provide thousands of varied
jobs. The healthcare industry consists of the
following nine segments:
- Hospitals - Large hospitals provide complete
healthcare services. Some hospitals specialize
in the treatment of Children and Certain types
of disease. Hospitals provide inpatient
services, where the patient stays overnight, and
outpatient services where the patient visits a
clinic within the hospital. Due to rising costs
there is a trend for outpatient services.
- Nursing and residential care facilities
provide inpatient services to those who need
continuous nursing care. Many facilities
specialize in Rehabilitation or Geriatrics,
where Nursing Aides provide most of the care.
- Physicians offices, account for over one
third of all health care facilities. Physicians
can practice privately or with a group of
healthcare professionals of different
specialties.
- Dentist offices, account for 20% of all
healthcare facilities in the U.S. Some dental
practices specialize in certain forms of
dentistry and usually comprise of a few members
of staff.
- Home health care services, is one of the
fastest growing segments of the healthcare
industry. This is mainly due to reduced costs,
patient’s preferences, and advancement in
technology.
- Offices of other health practitioners. This
includes offices of optometrists, chiropractors,
podiatrists, psychologists, occupational and
physical therapists, audiologists, dietitians,
speech-language pathologists, and other health
practitioners. It also includes offices of
alternative medicine practitioners i.e.
homeopaths, acupuncturists, hypnotherapists, and
naturopaths.
- Outpatient care centers: This includes
outpatient mental health and substance abuse centers, freestanding emergency centers, and
Kidney dialysis centers.
- Other ambulatory health care services,
includes blood and organ banks, pacemaker
monitoring services, smoking cessation centers
and ambulance transport services.
- Medical and diagnostic laboratories, offer
diagnostic services to the medical profession or
directly to a patient. In these laboratories
blood is analyzed, CT scans are interpreted and
clinical tests are preformed.
