Pharmacy Careers:
Pharmacy professionals are medicine experts who
provide medication and information about
medication to healthcare professionals and the
general public. The main duties of a pharmacy
professional are to improve an individual’s life
through medicine, while ensuring that the
patient obtains the correct information, advice
and amount of medication. Pharmacy professionals
advise the public and physicians on the dosages,
side effects and selection of different
medications.
There are many options open to someone
considering a career in Pharmacy as it is one of
the fastest growing healthcare sectors. There
are also many opportunities for Pharmacists who
specialize in certain diseases e.g. cancer. This
is due to the ongoing development of new
treatments. Pharmacists involved with new
medicines, work from their development in the
laboratory to their distribution to the end
patient.
Pharmacy professionals can work in many
settings including, high street pharmacies,
Hospital wards, carrying out research in
university Labs, Education and so on. If you are
considering a career in Pharmacy, you will need
to have a strong science background and be an
excellent communicator.
The different careers in
Pharmacy include:
- Pharmacist
- Pharmacy Aide
- Pharmacy Technician
Education:
A pharmacist must complete a Pharm.D. degree
(doctorate of Pharmacy) program to practice.
Upon completion the Pharmacist must then pass
the licensure requirements of the state in which
he/she wishes to practice.
Pharmacy Aides do not need any formal training
but most employers look for a high school
diploma with courses in biology, chemistry and
physics, and some community college training.
Pharmacy Technician. Currently major employers
look for formal training and certifications when
recruiting Pharmacy Technicians. The most
popular certification is the Exam for the
Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT)
given by the Institute for the Certification of
Pharmacy Technicians (ICPT).
Career:
Huge career growth is expected for Pharmacy
professionals. This is due to the increase in
use of prescription drugs, the aging population,
and an emphasis on prevention by insurance
companies in order to reduce large hospital
bills. There are also new jobs being created in
disease management, sales and marketing, managed
care organizations and Pharmacy Informatics.
