Physical Therapy Careers:
Physical Therapy or physiotherapy professionals
work to improve individuals mobility while
preventing injury and relieving pain. Patients
of a Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist
suffer from conditions such as arthritis,
fractures, heart disease, lower back pain,
cerebral palsy and head injuries. With a career
in Physical Therapy you can choose to specialize
in an area such as pediatrics, orthopedics,
sports medicine, geriatrics or neurology.
If you are interested in a career in Physical
Therapy, the following careers options are
available to choose from:
- Physical therapist: Physical Therapists PTs,
work closely with patients to promote their
overall fitness and mobility. To become a
Physical Therapist you will need to graduate
with a Master’s or Doctoral Degree from an
accredited physical therapy program and obtain a
state license. The Commission on Accreditation
in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) is the
accreditation body for physical Therapy Master’s
and Doctoral Degree programs.
- Physical therapist assistant: Physical
Therapist Assistants (PTAs), work under the
direct supervision of a Physiotherapist.
Associate Degrees programs are available from
colleges and universities and can also be
accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in
Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
Physiotherapist Assistants must be licensed,
certified or registered to work.
- Physical therapist aide: Physical Therapist
Aides receive on the job training, and work
under the close supervision of either a
Physiotherapist or a Physiotherapy Assistant.
Most employers look for Aides with a high school
diploma. High school courses in Biology,
Mathematics and English are an advantage when
applying for a post.
Salary & Job Prospects:
Employment for Physical Therapists, Aides and
Assistants are excellent. Those specializing in
Rehabilitation, Geriatrics and Orthopedics are
expected to have the best job opportunities.
This is due to the fact that people are living
longer. Advances in medicine which result in
more people surviving strokes and other illness
and injuries is also a factor in the growth of
Physical Therapy Services.
