Quito:
Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, is situated 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level, in a picturesque valley surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Andes. Quito is one of the most beautiful, richest, and oldest cities in South America. Due to its pleasant climate, Quito is often described as "The City of Eternal Spring." Fought over by the Incas and conquered by the Spanish in 1534, the city has an eventful history. With its stately colonial palaces, the downtown historical district has been declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site.
