Covering Letter Tips, Writing a Good Covering Letter |
Remember: First Impressions Last! As the first thing that the employer reads, your
covering letter must create a good first impression. It is your chance
to convince the employer that you have the skills and qualifications
required and have an interesting CV that is worth reading.
1. The covering letter must be tailor made to each job
opportunity and individual company. It personalises your approach to
companies. It is important to spend time making sure your covering
letter is relevant to the recipient. Make use of the company website,
the job advertisement, trade journals, newspapers and other resources to
obtain relevant information about the company you are applying to.
2. Address the letter to the particular person/careers
department stated on the advertisement. Refer to the advert or say how
you heard about the position.
3. Say why you want the job and what attracts you to the
company (you don't have the opportunity to say this on your CV). It
helps that the employer knows what motivates you, and it is a chance to
show that you have done some research into the company. Relate the
letter to the specific needs of the company.
4. Highlight your key strengths, in a concise sales
paragraph (sell yourself!). Highlight particular skills in your CV of
relevance, ensuring that they match up to the requirements of the position.
5. End on an optimistic note, mentioning your
availability for interview.
6. As with your CV, the letter should be brief (no more
than one A
4.side), relevant and easy to read, with the spelling and
grammar carefully checked.
7. Try to ensure the letter is on good quality paper
(not coloured). When sending via email, as with CVs, it's important to
send the covering letter as an attachment rather than in the body of the
email.
8. You can also use the covering letter to provide brief
background information regarding your current situation: eg the
circumstances of redundancy or a career break.
Spending time on a Covering Letter is
time well spent!
