| Similar to a reverse Peace Corps program, Atlas Corps recruits Fellows from developing countries to volunteer and train within the United States at non-profits for one year. The Host organization and Fellow collaborate to improve the non-profit sector through innovation prompted by the exchange of culture and ideas. Host organizations pay around $26,000 or 60% of the cost per volunteer, while the rest of the funding comes from foundations, individuals, corporations, and the Colombian government.
Only in its second year of operation, Atlas Corps has doubled its volunteers from six to twelve and expects to gain more this year. For the first two years of the pilot program, Fellows were only accepted from Colombia and India, but the program is looking to expand worldwide during the 2009 application process. |
