Company Overview

This is a unique opportunity to work for a market leading multinational company based in Neuchatel Swizterland in a highly visible and challenging External Communications leadership role.

Core Role

The “Manager, External Communications” is a highly-visible, highly-strategic function that sits as part of the new “R&D Communications Group” and reports into the Director of the group. The group itself is split into five key components, including the Internal Communications, External Communications, Competitive Intelligence, Information Centre and Editorial Centre functions.

At the head of this unit is the Director, who is well-respected and vastly experienced communications expert who has amassed over ten years of experience working for blue-chip consultancy in the US before joining the organization over two years ago.

A high-profile external communication firm has been engaged in order to assist in this endeavor and this individual will be the key internal point of contact for this organization and responsible for managing this relationship effectively. This individual will be in a position of great visibility and will have to work cross-functionally to bring products to market in an integrated communication strategy. This will involve the management of external channels including media and press.

This individual will have to be able to not only devise the external strategy but also oversee the execution of the strategy in a timely and cost-efficient fashion. This individual will therefore need to have strong project management experience and demonstrate the ability to pick up complex scientific and technical expertise quickly and translate these into English for the wider public.

In the long term this individual will be integral part of shaping the organisation’s communication strategy till 2011 and essential in highlighting leadership role for PMI R&D in this organisation.

The position’s key responsibilities will include and not be limited to the following:

-Providing guidance and support to internal partners for the successful execution of external communications strategies and supporting the Director in serving as a center of expertise for the R&D organization on external communications issues.

-Managing appropriate approvals for all external communications of R&D material

-Executing proactive communications strategies on key issues

-Proactively building relationships with key stakeholders and identifying opportunities to communicate PMI R&D’s strategies and scientific developments.

-Establishing and managing an R&D external communications calendar, and proactively developing communications materials on key scientific developments.

-Assisting the Director in developing messaging and positioning on R&D’s business and on key and emerging issues, to communicate to external audiences.

-Identifying communications channels and managing key media relationships

-Supporting the Director in the planning and execution of communications support for R&D initiatives.

-Supporting the Director Tobacco Regulation and Policy in the development of product and regulatory strategies.

-Managing key external Issues Communications initiatives for R&D employees in all locations

-Managing requests for sponsorship of scientific events, conferences, and speaking engagements.

-Managing the R&D external outreach and communications efforts

-Managing all incoming inquiries on R&D topics, recommending course of action, identifying key respondents from R&D and assisting in the development of appropriate responses-.Acting as an R&D spokesperson for non-expert communications

Skills Required: Required Competencies:
-University degree in Business, Law, Communications, Journalism
-Extensive experience working in Corporate Communications or Public Relations
-Experience working in highly technical/regulated industry.
-Project/ Program/Line management experience (preferably in a matrix environment).
-Media and business knowledge/orientation.
