State Auto Insurance Company, an eighty-seven-year-old, A+ (Superior rated) property-casualty insurance company, has an opening for an experienced Loss Control Supervisor to work in our Indianapolis, Indiana, office. The incumbent supervises Loss Control Consultants and Senior Loss Control Consultants plus monitors timeliness and quality of vendors providing loss control services for the company. The Loss Control Supervisor occupies a leadership role in that the incumbent works with corporate and branch teams, in the marketing of loss control services and programs.
Qualified applicants should possess at least five years of commercial loss control experience preferably working for a property/casualty insurance company. In-depth knowledge of OSHA, NFPA and other applicable codes and standards is required. This position also requires at least two years of proven, successfully supervisory background. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organization skills are also necessary. A college degree and/or professional designations such as ALCM, ARM or CSP are desired. Some overnight travel will be necessary.

SKILL SETS: Provides guidance and direction that enables the unit to consistently make a significant contribution to the organization. Regularly reviews and assesses individual staff member’s effectiveness against performance expectations. Successfully manages the daily functions of the unit by establishing and maintaining methods and procedures that effectively and efficiently utilize allocated resources.
1. The incumbent possesses a strong understanding of loss control and risk management disciplines and principles.
2. The Loss Control Supervisor is committed to employee and self development and continuous learning of the loss control discipline.
3. The Loss Control Supervisor is very knowledgeable and has good comprehension of N.F.P.A., O.S.H.A., ANSI, etc., standards and codes.
4. The incumbent has organizational skills that allow him/her to balance and prioritize simultaneously several projects.
5. The incumbent has strong communication skills that enable him/her to effectively lead loss control-related training sessions.
Position Qualifications:
Communication: Technical writing skills are necessary in order to prepare clear and concise written reports for Underwriting and management. Good verbal communication skills are also required in that the Loss Control Supervisor will address corporate, branch management, and the employee group.
Computer: The Loss Control Supervisor must have strong word-processing and database skills.
Education: The incumbent must have a college degree or a combination education and experience deemed equivalent of a degree. The incumbent should have completed a CSP or ARM designation.
Experience: The Loss Control Supervisor will have at least five years’ experience in a loss control or a risk management capacity.
Technical: Is familiar with all functions of safety engineering and loss control. Is well-versed in technical phrases and terminology pertaining to loss control, and is familiar with coverages of commercial insurance policies. Knows company philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures. Remains abreast of insurance and safety industry. Maintains familiarity with management practices and principles and company personnel functions.
