| Job Description: |
The Herschel Space Observatory, due for launch in May 2009, will perform astronomical photometry and spectroscopy in the far infrared and submillimetre (57–670 micron) wavelength range. Its scientific payload consists of three instruments, developed by Principal Investigator teams. The majority of its observing time is available to the general user community, via Calls for Proposals. To support The Herschel Science Centre (HSC), located at ESAC, we are looking for:
Astronomy Data Processing Technician
HSC is responsible for the generation of standard products and for quality control of the generated products. All observational data will be systematically processed to generate products that will be distributed to the astronomical community and for quality control purposes.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
The candidate will perform systematic and bulk data processing:
• to generate the raw scientific data and produce levels 1 & level 2 type products for standard observations,
• for execution of processing of special modes, such as serendipity and parallel modes or calibration campaigns,
• for testing purposes by the HSC-Maintenance Group,
and will perform systematic examination of quality of all observations processed through the pipeline.
The specific duties include:
• Pipeline processing
-Installing, running and monitoring the pipeline processing for systematic, on-demand and bulk reprocessing,
-Triggering possible maintenance intervention in the case of problems,
-Provision and maintenance of relevant procedures.
• Quality control
-Performing systematic examination of quality of all observations processed through the pipeline,
-Triggering possible instrument expert intervention in the case of problems,
-Ensuring that the quality flagging is done in a timely manner,
-Entering correct quality information attached to archived observations,
-Generating lists/views with summaries of quality assessment in order to obtain various quality statistics by those interested in such statistics,
-Provision and maintenance of relevant procedures.
• Participation in test campaigns
-Acceptance testing of new HCSS versions,
-Ad-hoc support to HSC test campaigns.

Skills Required:: |
Skills and experience:
• Fluent in English; knowledge of another ESA member state language is an asset;
• University degree in a scientific discipline (preferably in astronomy), or equivalent;
• Experience in interacting with the science community and in using databases and handling database queries would be an advantage;
• Interest in coding of small tools and programs would be an advantage.;
• Experience in signal processing would be an advantage;
• Willing to operate in a team environment;
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
