| Job Description: |
A leading agricultural research institute currently has a vacancy for a senior plant breeder, based at Mount Edgecombe, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
The incumbent will assume membership of a trans-disciplinary team that devises and implements conventional and novel breeding, crossing and selection strategies for the production of superior sugarcane varieties for the entire South African sugar industry.
Key performance areas of this position are:
• participating in the management of routine breeding and selection operations at both the strategic and field level;
• actively engaging with routine breeding and selection operations;
• conducting research to improve efficiencies within the breeding and selection programme; and
• developing systems and approaches to expand the integration of molecular strategies into routine breeding operations.

Skills Required:: |
Applicants should have a PhD (or at least a MSc or equivalent) with Genetics / Plant Breeding as majors and a good knowledge of statistics. A driver`s licence, fluency in written and spoken English and computer literacy are essential.
This post requires soeone with the ability to manage people as well as their various projects whilst running their own research at the same time. Both lab and field work will be required. |
