Ruby on Rails Developer / Bioinformatician One Year Contract - London UK
Manage the development of a web based database for Discovery Informatics!
Join a world-leading centre of excellence, and the major centre in the UK, for research on infectious diseases in their specialist area in addition to being one of eight research institutes sponsored by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and private International Research centres around the world.
They are focused on understanding the intimate interactions between pathogens and their hosts, with a view to developing improved strategies to control, prevent or limit infections. Linked to this goal will be practical advances in the rapid and accurate diagnosis of infections, differentiation between infected and vaccinated animals, improvement in current vaccines, development of new control methods, expansion of surveillance and reference laboratory capacities, and the further development and improvement of epidemiology and modelling capabilities. The remit of this project includes infectious disease surveillance, providing specialist and reference microbiology and microbial epidemiology, co-ordinating the investigation and cause of national and uncommon outbreaks, helping advise government on the risks posed by various infections and responding to international health alerts. The current swine influenza situation has generated the requirement for a Rails Developer to work with in house bioinformaticians to generate a web-based resource for the accumulation and analysis of swine influenza gene sequences with linked clinical and epidemiological information. The project will be for one year but this post is required urgently.
This particular project is aimed at bringing together data across a number of remote sites. As project manager you will need to demonstrate confidence and experience in relation database development and design using Ruby on Rails
We are looking for a talented Rails developer with proven skills and experience of web application design and development. The successful candidate should have a clear understanding of web and system security issues, an ability to design for best application performance and strong skills in interface design for optimal usability.
Skill Requirements and Responsibilities
Demonstrable skills in Rails, evidenced by applications developed for academic, commercial sector or open source projects.
Usage of HTTP, CSS and Javascript
Extensive knowledge of PostgreSQL or similar RDBMS
Knowledge/experience of UNIX server management
Good knowledge of web technologies: Object Oriented Programming, HTTP protocol.
Experience in multi-disciplinary projects with an ability to fully meet deadlines.
Ability to prepare functional and technical documentation and to provide training to users.
Working closely with senior staff and clients to ensure projects are completed on time/budget
Keeping fully abreast of latest thinking in all areas of web development
This is an excellent opportunity to play a major part in the development of this collaborative site but also liaise and work with leading scientists and other people across the research community.
Ideally you should have a recognised qualification in either Bioinformatics, Biological Data Analysis, Proteomics, Genomics and or experience in the development of scientific websites / information systems.
