Are you passionate about making a difference in the world? Are you looking for more sustainability experience in a cutting-edge, dynamic organization that promotes, supports, and models sustainability? If so, consider becoming an unpaid volunteer intern at Natural Capitalism Solutions.
At Natural Capitalism Solutions, volunteer interns have the opportunity to:
• Work with the sustainability pioneer, Hunter Lovins.
• Hear world class speakers from various sustainability fields.
o Past speakers have included experts on sustainable approaches to energy, water, waste, and lifestyles,a former senior economist for The World Bank, the founder of the Boulder Green Builder’s Guild, a producer of executive management programs, and a former top Toyota executive speaking on lean and green systems.
• Be “at the table” for innovative discussions and planning sessions.
• Have an individualized internship to develop professional skills and talents.
• See the direct impacts of your work on the structure of capitalism in companies, communities and countries.
Hunter Lovins and the Natural Capitalism Solutions team create tools to assist businesses and industry in developing sustainable practices and in becoming sustainable organizations. Natural Capitalism Solutions’ interns research and analyze existing management tools, techniques, and practices of organizations pursuing sustainability. In addition, interns help develop new tools and strategies to support this work.
Interns participate in local conferences, industry events, staff meetings, company outings, and networking opportunities. Day to day responsibilities will vary. Carpooling and vanpooling to the Natural Capitalism building near Longmont is being organized.
Projects for Internships will vary. Past/current projects include:
• Research and development of business sustainability stories.
• Research and development of sustainability strategy and analysis tools.
• Creation of marketing plans for specific business development projects.
• Identification of new business opportunities.
• Research and development of material for the Climate Protection Manual for Cities.
• Market research, analysis, and development of material for the Climate Protection Manual for Small Businesses.
• Creation of new technical tools for climate protection.
• Creation of case stories for Local Action for Sustainable Economic Renewal;
• Identification of solutions and barriers for local governments working to incorporate sustainability; and
• Developing relationships with local education, government, and business leaders.
Selection Process:
Natural Capitalism Solutions’ volunteer intern applicants tend to be self-motivated, hard working individuals. Successful interns will be familiar with the principles of Natural Capitalism and sustainability. Basic literacy in PowerPoint, Microsoft Office, and other commonly used business software is required. Experience beyond basic level software is welcomed. Candidates must demonstrate research skills including Internet, journal, and publication research, along with a high level of writing and communication skills.

Preference is given to applicants who write a 1000-word essay highlighting what they think are the major issues in business development and sustainability, including how to address those issues. If you choose not to write an essay specific to business development and sustainability, please submit a sample that demonstrates not only your writing ability, but also demonstrates thorough research and accurate citations.

Skills Required:: |
Interns will preferably possess:
• A desire to learn;
• Knowledge of the principles of Natural Capitalism;
• Experience working with either local governments or small- to medium-size businesses; Economic development;
• Urban planning or redevelopment;
• Land development;
• Private sector business/industry development with demonstrated ability and skills in sustainability;
• Knowledge of sustainable development; and/or
• Experience in business operations.
• A laptop computer with MS Office (Mac or Windows ok).
• High speed Internet access to work remotely. |
