Background:
A pioneer in the global wireless telecommunications business is seeking to challenge traditional business and operating models for wireless broadband networks in Africa by funding the establishment of a green-field WiMax network in East Africa and operating it with a focus on bridging the digital divide. We are seeking no ordinary entrepreneur to lead this effort. Your commitment will be absolute, your passion fervent, no barrier will stop you - you will walk through walls to achieve your objectives. You will have extreme autonomy - this business will be your baby and your responsibility to birth.
The Opportunity:
Licenses have been obtained such that you will have authorization to build a broadband telecommunications network business in East Africa. This business will deploy and manage its own network infrastructure and will offer more than just bandwidth to urban and rural communities – it will offer value added services over the network as an integral part of its offering. The network will serve the developed and underdeveloped regions and the services will address the needs of all segments of the community, including the poorest. You will be willing to roll up your sleeves and willing to deploy the network equipment yourself if necessary, or you will find the experts to help you do so – you will do whatever it takes. You will be a bulldog, and yet savvy, diplomatic and tactful in your discussions and negotiations with government ministers and ecosystem partner executives. Following deployment of the network infrastructure, you will run the business while retaining the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit that enabled you to get this far. You will develop a culture of innovation, agility and prudent risk taking in order to develop new business and operating models. Your focus will be on all segments of the marketplace, but you will pay particular attention to the needs of poor communities by deploying services (physical and virtual) that serve their needs.

•Proven track record of success in managing complex, multi-stakeholder, international projects •Experience building ground-breaking or disruptive entrepreneurial ventures from the ground up •Excellent analytical, communication and interpersonal skills •Innovative and creative problem solver and strategic thinker with strong initiative and personal self assurance •An Entrepreneurial spirit – with the ability to think strategically and act tactically •Comfort with very unstructured problems and ability to manage complexities under pressure •Thrive in the absence of boundaries and guidance, and able to set own frameworks •Passionate about this opportunity •Passionate about poverty alleviation •Technical project management experience or experience with WiMax or other broadband technologies is desired, but not a requirement for the right candidate •Social grace and the personality to build effective relationships and partnerships at all levels of the private and public sector •Ability to work independently with little-no day-to-day guidance, a broad and ambitious mandate, and few details on how to achieve the goal •Optimistic about the potential for change, confident in the ability to make things happen, and realistic about what can be expected from others •Natural risk taker •Comfortable disrupting the norm •Experience working across the private and public sector •Experience working in developing countries, ideally in Sub-Saharan Africa |
