Nurse midwives have been assisting with births for centuries. Today, in addition to birthing, they provide a full range of primary health care services for women, including gynecology checkups, family planning services, preconception care, prenatal care, and postpartum care. The philosophy that guides the work of nurse midwives is that childbirth should be a natural experience in surroundings that are as comfortable as possible for the mother. These professionals offer individualized and personalized care and encourage family members to participate in the process, including the birth itself. They help mothers prepare for the delivery of their babies by providing childbirth classes and teaching them what to expect during and after delivery.
Nurse midwives work with women who have been screened and are expected to have uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries. High-risk pregnancies are referred to obstetricians (a physician who specializes in the care of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the recuperative period following delivery) . If a delivery proceeds without complications that threaten the life or health of the mother or baby, the birth is allowed to occur naturally, without the use of drugs or special equipment. Although the nurse midwife can handle simple complications, obstetricians are always available for consultation and backup. If a caesarian section becomes necessary, this procedure must be performed by a physician.
Nurse midwives are qualified to care for babies after delivery and to provide follow-up care for both mothers and infants. They teach parents about infant care and feeding as well as monitor the progress of both mothers and their babies in the months following birth. Nurse midwives attend births in hospitals, birth centers, and at times in private homes.
