Work Experience
2008-2009 Environmental Engineer - Soil Remediation & Wastewater Treatment
CDE Ireland Ltd and Queen’s University Belfast, United Kingdom
Responsible for the design, development and testing of a new soil remediation process and product
• Studied land and water contamination sources of different sites and collected data to establish a baseline condition for levels of pollution or contamination
• Reviewed environmental legislation in UK & EU and identified whether contamination exists in accordance with legislative drivers
• Designed a soil remediation process (physico-chemical treatment) to remove organic (TPH, PAHs, BTEX) or inorganic (heavy metals: As, Pb, Cd) contaminants in order to concentrate them in the ultra-fine particles to be sent to landfill
• Identified and selected the suppliers for: jet pump, attrition scrubber, oil-water separator, froth flotation, filter press
• Studied environmental markets and developed the business model for the new soil remediation equipment, and identified potential customers
2007-2008 R&D Project Lead - Coating of Dental Amalgam for Corrosion Protection
Zakhem International and University of Balamand, Lebanon
• Analysed requirements and existing dental amalgam coating products
• Studied functions and behaviour of coating raw materials (mercury, copper, tin) and saliva components (calcium, magnesium)
• Developed a coating process through electroplating of human saliva components, to protect against galvanic current corrosion
• Designed and fabricated alpha and beta prototypes of a portable electronic device for in-vivo amalgam coating
• Tested and evaluated the alpha prototype in terms of functionality and performance, and developed beta prototype with improved efficiency of coating
• Conceptualization, project planning and coordination; leader of a chemical engineering team and an electrical engineering team
2006-2007 R&D Project Lead - Polymer Packaging for Solid Oral Drug Delivery System
Zakhem International and University of Balamand, Lebanon
• Analysed system requirements (non-toxicity, adsorption, and inertia)
• Studied existing organic polymer packaging products
• Developed microspheres of Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP) as delivery systems for solid drugs
• Performed characterization of the microspheres through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (X-RD)
• Performed coating of PVP onto PMMA microspheres
• Studied the dispersion and release of an active agent in the polymer particles
• Team leadership, research design, planning and coordination
2005-2006 Research Fellow – Aromatic Polymers for Bio-Chemical Sensors, Biosensors
University of Nantes, France
• Analysed aromatic hydrocarbons-based thin films with spectroscopy
• Synthesised and separated oligoanilines
• Developed thin solid films of oligoaniline, upon selected conditions of rate of deposition and thickness
• Performed a doping process to achieve thin film conductivity
• Tested and evaluated the sensor sensitivity through several methods
2003-2005 R&D Project Lead - Development of Biodegradable Fibres for Composites
University of Savoie, France
• Developed a new type of cellulose fibre, vegetal macromolecule, through doping with nanoparticles to improve resistance to humidity, acidity, heat and pressure for carbonfibre replacement in industrial applications
• Developed a Chormatogenic Chemistry process for fabricating the modified cellulose fibre with 3 grafting agents (Terephthaloyl Chloride, Para-Aminostyrene and Styrene) under different conditions of humidity, temperature and pressure.
• Contributed to product validation by testing adhesion with polyester matrix
• Produced process documentation
• Coordinated a team of 2 researchers: research design, planning and supervision, and performing experiments and data analysis
2002-2003 Research Fellow - Fabrication of Superconductor Thin Films of Thallium Cuprates
University of Savoie, France
• Developed thin films of Thallium Cuprates with improved superconductivity by spray pyrolysis
• Testing of thin films with strong electric current proved an improvement in superconductivity
1998-2002 Doctoral Research Work - Materials Institute Jean Rouxel, University of Nantes,
France
“Development of New Generation of Bio-Chemical Sensors based on Aromatic Oligomers - Optical, Morphological and Electrical Characterizations of Sensitive Organic Thin Films”
• Analysed existing bio-chemical (biosensors) and optical sensors products
• Synthesis & analysis of organic & inorganic materials via electrochemistry and spectro-chemistry methods
• Studied functions and behaviour of deposited raw materials (polyaniline, gold)
• Design, development and nanofabrication of chemical and optical sensors of oligomers thin films deposited on gold pre-coated substrates (biochip platform)
• Grafting the films with chemical agents for protection against humidity and acidity.
