Higher Diploma, Information Technology
First class Honours
The Higher Diploma in Information Technology is an intensive postgraduate conversion course intended for a graduate whose primary degree is not in the field of computing.
This diploma blends traditional elements of Computer Science theory and practise with modern areas of application in an Internet context.
A feature of the course is an emphasis on practical work and experience with modern tools for developing and managing software and web based digital content.
On completion of the course participants are expected to reach a level of competence equivalent to that of a 3-year computer science graduate programme.
The main generic character qualities required for the successful completion of the course include being a good communicator, having a logical mind, and being self-disciplined.
The course consisted of numerous weekly practical problems where the particular problem had to be analysed and an approach had to be documented. A solution was then achieved based on this approach. Data was then compiled to test the solution and results were documented

Bachelor of Arts Degree, Single Honours Geography
Honours Degree
First year modules included Geography, English and Sociology.
As a result of my grades in Geography in first year, I was personally invited to study Single Honours Geography for the remainder of the degree.
The degree consisted of 70% theory and 30% practical classes and continuous assessment. Practical classes dealt with statistical techniques, map reading and design, survey methods, air photographs interpretation and remote sensing.
As well as several assignments, essays and presentations, there were two major projects completed during this degree. In second year, a week long fieldtrip occurred. This involved daily excursions to particular sites and analysing and documenting the findings, which were daily presented. A technical report was written about the fieldtrip on our return. The purpose of this was to get students familiar with report writing and presenting findings to an audience. In third year, a research thesis on any suitable topic that is approved by the Department was completed. This thesis was supervised by a member of staff and regular meetings occurred to discuss its progress. Students had to present their proposed idea and progress to several members of staff.
Graduates of Geography become competent in a number of generic skills including computer skills, Internet use, problem solving, independent learning/self directed research, report writing, public presentations, use of audio-visual technology.
