Year 2: Dissertation
During the second year of study and approved dissertation
Relative to the domain of educational psychology had to be
Undertaken. This was done in the field of Vocational guidance and the title of the dissertation: “Vocational Interest as a variable in the Career choice of University Freshmen”.
Examination : The examination consisted of three examination papers plus a practical examination. A pass mark in all three compulsory modules, the practical examination and the dissertation had to be obtained. This was done with distinction.
Internship : In order to register as an educational psychologist with the Health professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), it was required to obtain a M Ed (Educational Psychology) degree and to in addition to this also complete an internship (of at least 12 months; full-time) at an approved institution and under the supervision of a registered educational psychologist Dr JJ Du Toit at the Educational Guidance Service, Germiston SA.

In 1991 I was approached by the principal of a very prominent school for learning disabled children in our area to apply for the post of senior psychologist. This post entailed managerial duties and the opportunity to work within a dynamic work environment. This school has 650 pupils between the ages of 5 and 19 years. As Senior Psychologist I was responsible for the management of the Educational Guidance Service (Paramedical Department) of the School. This service consisted of occupational and speech therapists, remedial teachers and psychologists (22 staff members in total). I was directly responsible to the principal of the school and served on the executive of the school. I was also acting principal of the school for a period of 4 months.

In 1996 my wife obtained the franchise rights to open a Kip Mc Grath Education Centre in our home town. We jointly bought a house and converted it into offices, where we mainly work with children with learning and behaviour problems. The centre has up to 120 students per week. My wife and her staff tutors the pupils in areas of weakness such as reading spelling, comprehension and mathematics. I assist with assessment, behaviour, emotional problems and appropriate placement of pupils. I also have the services of a psychometrist who helps with the assessment of clients.
Local doctors refer a number of adult clients for Post Traumatic Stress, Depression, Anxiety, marriage counselling etc.

During the first of the two year period of full-time lectures, the
curriculum consisted of the following two compulsory sections:
(a) Theoretical Section (three modules):

- Intervention (therapeutic strategies, counselling skills)
(b) Practical Section:

Year 2: Dissertation
During the second year of study and approved dissertation
relative to the domain of educational psychology had to be
undertaken. This was done in the field of Vocational guidance and the title of the dissertation: “Vocational Interest as a variable in the Career choice of University Freshmen”.
Examination : The examination consisted of three examination papers plus a practical examination. A pass mark in all three compulsory modules, the practical examination and the dissertation had to be obtained. This was done with distinction.
Internship : In order to register as an educational psychologist with the Health professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), it was required to obtain a M Ed (Educational Psychology) degree and to in addition to this also complete an internship (of at least 12 months; full-time) at an approved institution and under the supervision of a registered educational psychologist Dr JJ Du Toit at the Educational Guidance Service, Germiston SA.
Registration Registration as an Educational Psychologist with the HPCSA
was obtained in 1989.
