Career Summary
2006 - date Seconded ICT Officer for Cornwall Enterprise Company
Over the past two and a half years I have been working as a seconded officer in Cornwall Enterprise Company. As I am the sole IT contact within the company, I undertake a large variety of different tasks which I have briefly outlined below.
I provide standard technical support for Windows XP users using a combination of Office 2002 and 2003. In addition to this standard support I also support many third party applications including Act, Pegasus Opera, Barclays Business Master, Adapt and many more. In addition to these applications I also support the reception and tourism departments’ VIP phone system.
I have also created, and maintain, an asset register where all IT equipment is recorded. As well as other information, the register shows which division or individual holds the equipment. This data, together with other collected information, is used to form the annual SLA (that amounts to approx £90,000 pa). This covers any computer and software support that exists with any third party suppliers.
I manage the sourcing and procurement of IT software and hardware using both Cornwall County Council and external sources. As well as this, I keep a detailed spreadsheet of purchases and use this information to assist in the invoicing process.
I have carried out some project management. My latest project has involved organising the tasks of wiring and networking an entire building together with migrating a server from one network to another. I also organised the transfer of all data and applications onto the new network. In addition to this I organised the procurement of the phone system and oversaw the works. I found this project challenging as the forty people involved in the move originated from three separate companies and they all had different systems and requirements before joining the new network. I found the project enjoyable and gained further knowledge about organising and procuring systems that, before this project, I have not been involved in.
As part of my ongoing responsibilities, I create and maintain technical procedures on systems and processes which are then published in an electronic document records management system.
I have recently been involved in several tenders where I had to spec the customers’ requirements, suggest suitable companies to provide the relevant systems and also provide my technical recommendation of those tenders.
I am also involved in hosting websites using a virtual private server and arranging the purchase and maintenance of domain names. In addition to this I assist in updating website content.
As part of my secondment I am also contracted out to another external company. Within this company I am their sole IT contact for all IT requirements. This involves supporting their Small Business Server 2003 and associated applications, including Exchange, and Backup Exec as well as the hardware. I deal with the procurement of their hardware and software and I ensure the company is complying with all software licensing laws.
1999-2006 ICT Support Officer for Cornwall County Council
When I commenced my employment within Cornwall County Council in 1999, I first worked on the Service Desk. I received calls from all departments within Cornwall County Council, logged details of the user’s problems and prioritised them, escalating to the relevant team or individuals.
From there I moved into the Backup and Restore team where I ensured backup jobs were scheduled and completed successfully. This involved using Backup Exec software both directly on servers and via tape libraries. I also dealt with support calls requiring files and folders to be restored from the data backups. A further part of my role within this department was to run a scanning service. This involved creating forms in a program called Teleform. The form was sent to members of the public/Council employees for completion. On return of the completed forms, I scanned a large quantity and analysed the results. At times I had to create statistical reports using both text and graphics.
From here I moved into 2nd Line Support (Remote Support). My main responsibility in this department was to resolve incidents remotely, where possible. I encountered a large variety of different problems ranging from general Office queries to issues involving servers, printers and other peripherals. I used Active Directory and Hyena when creating, deleting and amending network accounts. I also used Exchange for mail support queries, and frequently used terminal services to connect to users and servers. Support also extended to troubleshooting dial up and VPN connections.
I then moved into 3rd Line Support (Field Support). Here calls were assigned that could not be resolved by the Remote Support Team. These were incidents that required on site support with the customer or when Remote Support had attempted all other avenues and the incident was still unresolved. Another part of this role was undertaking the installation of new IT equipment. The installation ranged from PC’s / Laptops, printers, VPN installations, software, RAM and other hardware etc. Project work was also undertaken within this department. This involved chargeable work and normally this would be a larger task; mainly office moves and large PC / laptop upgrades etc.
My first employment was within a typesetting company in the editing department. I quickly progressed and secured a supervisory role in the company’s recently opened offices in St Lucia.
I was responsible for supervising approximately five members of staff in the downloading, printing, scanning and performing Optical Character Recognition on manuscripts. Electronic copies then had to be edited to replicate the manuscript.
I worked here for two and a half years, at which time I moved with the company again to assist in opening another branch in Guyana, South America. In Guyana, my role continued as before; however I also undertook management training which involved training another supervisor and I supervised an additional five members of staff.
