Job Description
Queen Elizabeth Hospital
Key Functions:
1.Management
1.1 Demonstrate effective leadership qualities as a team leader, plan, organize and manage duties effectively to make the best use of time.
1.2 Maintain effective communication with health personnel to ensure patients received a safe standard care.
1.3 Maintain the health and safety standards on ward/unit by ensuring that policies are followed.
1.4 Deal sensitively with enquiries/complaints from patients/relatives or other Health Personnel, I order that they are resolved satisfactorily.
2. CLINICAL
2.1 Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care of a group of patients to ensure individualized care.
2.2 Work in a cooperative relationship with other Nursing Staff, to ensure that all patients receive a high standard of care.
2.3 Communicate and cooperate with Medical Staff in carrying out medical instructions and giving feedback on its effect on the patient.
2.4 Use hospital policies and procedures, when carrying out nursing care and bring to the attention of sister when these are no longer appropriate or needs updating.
2.5 Take every opportunity to teach patients/relatives on their condition and treatment.
2.6 Liaise with medical staff on matters concerning the changes in the condition or treatment of the patents.
2.7 Promote the professionalism of nursing, as a Role model and by good guest relations.
2.8 Keep knowledge and skills up to date and promote a learning environment in ward/department.
2.9 Assist in the education/training of student nurses and their health care staff.
Davao Doctors Hospital
1.Assessment Of Patient's Clinical Status Upon Admission
1.1 Accurately assess individual’s patient’s needs for intensive care nursing.
1.2 Observes and records signs and symptoms, significant responses and reactions including symptoms and mental condition of the patient.
2. Anticipation and Prevention of Complications
2.1 Provides and maintains protective measures such as applying body straps and arm restraints for severely restless patients (with doctor’s order and relative consent).
2.2 Performs suctioning of oral, endotracheal and nasal secretions especially to patients with aspiration pneumonia, congestion and bleeding.
2.3 Closely monitor ECG tracing and refers immediately specially for arrhythmias, PVC’s, sinus bradycardia and any abnormalities.
2.4 Recognizes the normal and abnormal findings from laboratory and diagnostic exams and refers immediately to resident in-charge.
3. Emergency and Resuscitative Treatment
3.1 Assist Physician during CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) of patient who underwent cardiac arrest.
3.2 Prepares and administer emergency drugs such as: Epinephrine and Atropine.
3.3 Administer inotropics drugs such as Dopamine and Dobutamine for hypotensive patients as ordered.
3.4 Assist the physician during intubations especially in cases of severe hypoxia and patients with decreasing sensorium.
4. Provides supportive measures like physical and psychological
4.1 Assist patients during morning care routines such as bed bath, shampoo in bed and changing of linens.
4.2 Turning to sides every two hours to prevent pressure sores.
4.3 Performs tepid sponge bath (TSB) especially to patients who are hyper thermic.
4.4 Performs tracheostomy care, endotracheal tube care, colostomy, ileostomy and gastrostomy.
5. Pre-operative and Post-operative Nursing Care
5.1 Prepares patients pr-operatively such as securing/witnessing the signing of consent for the procedures, securing blood products, administering pre operative medications(if ordered).
5.2 Ensuring safety and providing emotional support.
5.3 Taking vital signs, neuro- vital signs (NVS) and regulating IV fluids before going to OR.
5.4 Closely monitor VS, NVS, I&O every fifteen minutes until patients stable.
6. Monitor intubated patients specially during weaning process, from AC mode to SIMV mode followed by hooking them to T-piece and following the weaning parameters.
7. Prepares patients for extubation such as giving pre-extubation nebulization and suctioning.
8. Assist the physician during extubation such as giving pre-extubation nebulization and suctioning.
9. Assists the physician during extubation, perform pulmophysiotherapy and encourage patients to do deep breathing exercises.
10. Performs NGT insertion, Foley Catheterization and CVP reading.
11. Coordinates physician’s in-charge and assist in identifying patients needs for medical assistance and rehabilitation.
12. Evaluates Nursing care given and make necessary revisions through appropriate and endorsements of information relevant to patient care.
13. Assist the head nurse in providing learning experience for new nurses, non-nursing personnel and students.
14. Performs post mortem care.
15. Participation in Continuing Education Programs like seminars and conventions
