| Since 1947, the Council on International Educational Exchange, known as CIEE, has been in pursuit of its mission, "to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world."
Introduction
This past fall CIEE moved to a new facility in Portland Maine which will be both our world headquarters and the only corporate administrative office worldwide. Of course, we have and will continue to have operations all over the world, and various partnerships and working arrangements, but our goal is to have a single management center for all our activities.
CIEE was started in New York right after World War II. However, almost from its inception, the organization had two administrative offices, one in New York and one in Paris. Each of these offices served different program needs while supporting one another. Over time, as is to be expected, they developed somewhat different operating cultures. Later, in the 1960's through 1980's as CIEE expanded, the organization built administrative and operating centers in New York, San Francisco, Paris and Tokyo. Some of these engaged in multiple organizational activities and some like travel headquarters in San Francisco were quite separate from the rest of the organization.
By the late 1990s, CIEE had offices for both its travel company and exchange interests throughout the world and also had offices in the US in Boston and New York housing various activities. At the same time we became more geographically disparate, we also made a series of important business decisions. One of the key decisions was to divide the company into three distinct business units; IEX (Exchanges), ISP (Study Abroad) and CTS (Council Travel Services). Over time, these organizations took on different characters, had different leaders and developed somewhat different operating cultures. The companies also for various reasons had different office headquarters although in some cases they also had shared facilities.
In 2001, CIEE disposed of its travel company via a sale of all assets and closed all travel operations throughout the world that were not a part of the sale transaction. Following 9/11 in New York, we were also forced to change the nature of our exchange company operations and ultimately close or sell the exchange company offices in England, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. At that time, CIEE transformed itself from three to two divisions, IEX and ISP, the former based in Boston and the latter based first in New York and then ultimately moved to Portland in 2003.
The Goal
We are a mission driven organization. We serve that mission by the operation of a variety of programs in support of that purpose. These programs include:
Study Abroad Programs - Our study centers throughout the world, now in more than 35 countries and numbering more than 100 programs. These are for credit, academically oriented, high quality educational experiences for US college students.
Work Programs - These are short term experiential learning programs facilitated under the Fulbright-Hays Act using J visas to bring students to the US during their summer holidays. CIEE distributes this program in approximately 50 countries to about 35,000 students annually.
Trainee and Intern Programs - Like Work Programs, Trainee and Intern program operate under the Fulbright-Hays Act and use J visas. However, these programs are longer in duration (up to 18 Months) and tend to involve more substantive work than the work programs above with learning tied to specific plans and educational experiences. CIEE handles about 5000 participants from 30 countries.
High School Annual Year Programs - Also a Fulbright-Hayes based program, this program focuses on bringing young people to the US for a year or semester of high school. CIEE handles about 1400 students from 25 countries on this program.
These are not the only programs we operate. Over the years, we've developed other programs either in support of these core programs, as a service to the stakeholders with whom we work and/or, in order to develop new markets and opportunities that we believe will serve us well in the long run. These activities include our 'Teach In' Programs, Faculty Development, Outbound High School and our insurance related programs including iNext our student travel card and IEXTICO our captive health insurance company. We also manage a variety of other activities on a contract basis including our large office in Tokyo focused on English language testing and skill development, the HAESF project based in Hungary and the handling of certain financial matters for SUNY.
The conduct of these programs requires a wide myriad of people and a diverse set of skills. While our program and marketing staffs are largely organized by product groups, we also have a number of functional groups which play important roles across the operation of multiple activities. Finance, IT including both software development and network operations, program operations that support all our J visa programs and program operations that support our various study and outbound program activities are all essential parts of the work we do.
