Plasterers apply finish, and maintain and restore plaster or similar materials, on interior and exterior walls, ceilings and building partitions to produce plain or decorative surfaces. Drywall installers and finishers install and finish drywall sheets and various types of ceiling systems. Lathers install support framework for ceiling systems, interior and exterior walls and building partitions. They are employed by construction companies and by plastering, drywalling and lathing contractors, or they may be self-employed.

Over 6,000 Albertans are employed in the Plasterers, Drywall Installers and Finishers and Lathers occupational group which is expected to grow 2.5 to 3.5 per cent each year from 2006 to 2011 in Alberta. It is forecasted that 150 to 210 new positions will be created each year in addition to job openings created by employment turnover. (Note: Since plasterers form only a part of the larger occupational group on which this forecast is based, only a portion of the new positions created will be for plasterers.)
Employment turnover is expected to increase as members of the baby boom generation retire over the next five to ten years.
Salary
According to the 2005 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey, Albertans in the Plasterers, Drywall Installers and Finishers and Lathers occupational group working part-time or full-time earned from $23,400 to $70,700 a year. The average salary was $51,000 a year.
