Painters and decorators apply paint, wallpaper and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures. They are employed by construction companies, painting contractors and building maintenance contractors, or they may be self-employed.

Duties
Duties may vary from one position to another but, in general, painters and decorators:
review work orders or measure surfaces to estimate the quantity of materials required
remove old coatings using solvents, heat, sanding, wire brushing, water or sand blasting techniques
prepare surfaces by cleaning them, filling nail holes and cracks, and sanding rough spots
apply an undercoat primer or sealer before painting, or apply sizing before wallpapering
match specified colours by using premixed paints, or by mixing colour and pigment with oil and additives (for thinning and drying)
use brushes, rollers or spray guns to apply liquid coatings such as paint, stain or varnish to wood, metal, brick, concrete, plaster, stucco or stone surfaces
apply finishes that are sponged, ragged or layered
apply paper or fabric wall coverings
apply fire proof or fire retardant coatings
sandblast and apply industrial coatings.
Working Conditions
Painters and decorators try to arrange their work so they will be outdoors in late spring, summer and early fall and indoors in the late fall and winter. They must stand for long periods of time often working with their arms raised over their heads. There is some risk of injury due to falling from ladders, scaffolds or swing stages, and working with hazardous chemicals such as paint thinners and removers.
Painters and decorators may be required to lift and move items that weigh up to 20 kilograms
