Purpose of Job
To carry out day-to-day system and services management.
Tasks to ensure effective and efficient operations, and to participate in Infrastructure development projects/activities.
Principal Accountabilities
System Engineer (S.E.) main responsibilities:
Carry out the planning, design, evaluation, acquisition, implementation strategy and controlling the overall process of execution (incl. Project management) and commissioning of servers & workstations (both hardware & software).
In addition to service delivery, provide operational support of new servers, workstations and system software that could fit best into the Company environment to meet business needs.
Interface directly with the Business Units project team i.e. Business/Portfolio teams regarding IT computing capacity infrastructure matters (i.e. standards, policies & guidelines, interfaces, servers & workstations, system software etc) and project implementation strategy.
Ensure system integrity (i.e. systems access, security control), backup & availability and enhance these facilities including migration to new technology.
Manage the obsolescence planning for the installed computing processing infrastructure (e.g. workstations, Windows/Unix servers & others).
Evaluate existing hardware & software systems and networks and identify improvements required in order to obtain maximum benefit from Company’s investments.
Ensure that appropriate documentation of computing servers network infrastructure implemented are available and that the implemented equipment/systems are properly handed over for operational support.
Against the background of fast changing developments in computing capacity processing and networking technologies, the incumbent needs to continually develop & enhance the infrastructure to keep pace with the needs of the business, utilising the most cost-effective technologies/systems available. To do this, he has to keep abreast with the technology developments, both in terms of products/systems and importantly, relevant Shell Group and Industry standards
To carry out with some supervision on tasks such as:
1. Plan to install and implement IT infrastructure configuration changes based on product/system implementation plans. Prepare the site(s) and thoroughly test and install infrastructure products. Validate performance against expected results. Ensure backup/recovery procedures & facilities are available if required.
2. Provide support services to ensure smooth operation (ie adequate service performance and availability) and of the infrastructure products (hardware, software and facilities).
3. Develop the specification of the service level agreements. Specify & assist negotiation of operational service levels. Specify operational requirements for IM&T infrastructure systems and facilities based upon business requirements, particularly those that influence the timing of operations/maintenance activities.
4. Involve in Incident/Problem resolution. Diagnose the root cause and fix problem. Has an analytical and imaginative grasp of the problem.
5. Monitor security event logs and report (suspected) security violations to the Information Security Co-ordinator.
6. Apply sound system management practices and propose and implement new or revised improved standards and operating procedures for new or upgraded infrastructure products.
7. Prepare work instructions to decommission, de-install and physically remove infrastructure products. Initiate product removal due to obsolescence whilst ensuring fallbacks are provided.
8. Analyse functionality and capacity requirements for IT infrastructure based upon performance, present configurations, requests, future portfolio requirements and systems development projects. Take account of security, regulatory, HSE considerations and fallback needs for eg. power cuts.
9. Prepare short to medium term service plans, schedules, and work instructions to implement and operate/maintain infrastructure facilities and systems based upon agreed service levels and requirements. Review the timing to ensure minimum disruption of service and notify users of upcoming downtime and/or performance shortfall.
10. Monitor and fine tune the infrastructure system/facility/service/supplier performance based upon capacity utilisation statistics, error diagnostics, operating logs, reconfiguration models, throughput statistics, customer reviews based upon service level agreements and unit costs etc.

Qualifications
Required
Must have a degree in Computer Studies or equivalent and at least 4 years full-time work experience in relevant areas of information technology of which at least 2 years in System Engineering and Services
OR
A Higher National Diploma in Computer Studies, and at least 6 years full-time work experience in Computer Operations and Services, of which at least 4 years should have been at the job level immediate below.
Preferred
Possesses good systems management, service delivery, communication and interpersonal skills.
Accepts after-office hours duty assignment whenever required.

Experience
System Engineer
- Experienced system engineering professional with general understanding of E&P business.
- Working knowledge of the relevant computer infrastructure environment/platforms under which the IT systems services are running (refer dimensions above). Thoroughly familiar with all applicable tools, methods, procedures and equipment within the area of responsibility.
- Working knowledge of the use of industry standard, ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) methodology.
- Ability to continuously learn and apply new computer infrastructure technology.
- Good team working skills and maintain good customer relations.
Training
- Preferably knowledgeable in platforms such as Windows 2003, UNIX and Linux platforms
