Job Title Principal Architect Office
Department Architecture Grade: B
Reports to • Head of Department (Architectural & Departmental Matters)
• Project Manager (Project Matters)
Job purpose • The Principal Architect is a seasoned, registered professional with excellent proven competence in at least one principal sphere of architecture and exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• To assist Project Architects in the preparation of the Scope of Work and Design Briefs, Concept Designs and Schematic Design and the presentations thereof.
• To apply sound and diversified knowledge of architectural design principles and make independent judgements on architectural design approaches, problems and methods.
• To promote advanced architectural and design techniques and develop upon theories, precepts and practices.
• To provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced design architects and to work with them to improve and develop their creative abilities.
• Project Architects are appointed by the Head of Department from within or outside the firm. The title is project based and is consequently temporary. Principal Architects will typically be appointed as Project Architects for complex/large projects.
• The Project Architect is the principal design professional on an architectural project representing the firm with the client as well as with the contractor, associated consultants, and Statutory Authorities.
• The Project Architect will manage the entire architectural process through all defined stages until project completion is achieved. The Project Architect will lead the other design team disciplines, also.
Duties - include but are not limited to … As an Expert Professional:
• Arrange Peer Review sessions to discuss, evaluate and adjudicate the merits and qualities of individual concept designs and design details.
• Mentor colleagues, provide design critiques and expert advice and guidance on a range of architectural issues.
• Keep current on architectural design trends and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of contemporary and progressive construction technology, new building methods and new materials.
• Regularly apprise the Head of Department completely on the status of all design projects in which they are involved.
• Assist the HOD with staff performance appraisals.
As a Project Architect:
• Evaluate and interpret specific requirements from data received from the (Senior) Project Manager and/or the Client to identify issues that may influence the creation and/or development of concept designs.
• Develop outstanding and creative concept design ideas independently or in collaboration with other design architects and team members.
• Attend all design meetings with various parties (clients, suppliers, statutory authorities, other disciplines) to clarify and/or confirm design requirements, obtain information and ensure that the design facets of the project are being correctly progressed.
• Ensure the appropriate involvement of structural, mechanical and electrical disciplines in the development of concept designs.
• Manage the development of the approved concept design into a functional and efficient schematic arrangement that is effectively co-ordinated with the other disciplines (Engineering, QS).
• Assists in the preparation of preliminary cost estimates for concept designs.
• Facilitate the development of the production team structure, size and composition and a project time schedule in collaboration with the Head of Department and (Senior) Project Manager.
• Collaborate with the (Senior) Project Manager throughout the duration of a project to establish realistic and achievable project goals with prudent time schedules.
• Ensure that statutory authority submissions are timeously developed, checked and verified for submission in the correct format and that interim submissions for review (by the client or other parties) are timeously completed and meet contractual obligations.
• Supervise the Architect(s) and other team members to ensure that design development is accurate, reflects the design intent and is properly co-ordinated with other disciplines.
• Attend all project meetings with various parties (clients, suppliers, statutory authorities, other disciplines, site meetings) to clarify and/or confirm requirements, obtain information and ensure that all facets of the project are being correctly progressed.
• Manage the production of the working drawings, details, various schedules and the preparation of the Specifications and Tender Documents in accordance with the agreed time schedule, and implement appropriate corrective action on deviations.
• During the construction stage, ensure that all contract documents and drawings are regularly up-dated, support the Site Architect, make periodic site visits and inform the Resident Engineer and Project Manager of any problems.
• Prepare and/or assist in preparing correspondence to clients, consultants, municipal authorities, contractors and other relevant parties, in co-ordination with the Project Manager(s).
• Evaluate the work performance of architectural Project Team members, give face-to-face verbal feedback, guidance and assessment at regular intervals (not less than four times per year) and provide the Department Head with an annual written performance assessment for all staff that have worked on projects under their control.
• Regularly apprise the Head of Department completely on the status of all projects being managed.
Supervisory Responsibilities
List number and titles of subordinates Yes. Must be able to control at least 2 projects simultaneously, depending on size and complexity.
When assigned as a Project Architect, typically leads a Project Team comprising Architects, Technical Architects and CAD Technicians – 6 or more at one time per project.
Physical Demands of the job Office based, long hours. Attend meetings with the (Senior) Project Manager, or in his place, with clients, contractors, and other consulting disciplines.
Minimum Qualifications B Arch, BSc (Arch) or Diploma in Architecture.
Preferred Qualifications M Arch or MSc (Arch). Post graduate degree following a Bachelor’s degree or diploma.
Registration required Professional Registration in the country of origin and with Kuwait Society of Engineers
Type of Experience required Minimum 15 years experience in an architectural or multi-disciplinary practice with proven experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities speciifed above and expert level competencies in at least one architectural specialization. Should be CAD conversant (AutoCad).
