Job Purpose:
The Tree Farm Manager leads all horticultural practices for producing quality trees; provides professional leadership with efficient management of people and equipment; and plans, organizes, directs, controls, and coordinates activities of workers and volunteers engaged in the production of containerized trees, as well as managing staff and operations.
Primary Responsibilities:
• Manages all nursery operations for one or more tree farm nurseries
• Coordinates nursery operations for trees sold
• Recruits and hires qualified full time and variable nursery staff and contractors
• Assigns and supervises work and duty schedules of farm staff and/or contractors
• Trains the nursery staff in tree care techniques
• Performs quarterly performance evaluations for direct reports
• Explains and enforces safety regulations for nursery operation
• Inspects facilities and equipment daily to observe
o Quality of work
o Condition of nursery and trees
o Repair state of facilities and equipment
o Plant and soil conditions
• Follows up on inspections with actions needed to remedy any situations noted; holds staff and contractors accountable for efficiency, productivity, and high quality
• Manages operations to water, weed, mulch, prune, and cull trees for highest performance, productivity, and quality
• Determines plant growing conditions and sets planting and care schedules
• Oversees maintenance work to keep nurseries clean and secure
• Designs and oversees maintenance of irrigation systems for both tree farms and projects
• Identifies and labels trees and provides solutions to problems such as diseases, weed control, and insects
• Selects and purchases seedlings, fertilizers, disease control chemicals, and herbicides
• Negotiates contracts for seedlings and tree purchases
• Performs budget and accounting operations for effective nursery management
• Prepares trees for delivery and pick-up (including tree tagging, digging out, selective pruning, etc.)
• Conducts a monthly inventory of trees, equipment, and supplies; provide reports to management, and updates staff on availability
• Maintains and trains staff and contractors on daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal maintenance techniques and requirements
• Provides reports to manager and senior management staff as required
• Projects sales and tree production and expenses
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications/Skills Required:
The successful candidate will possess:
• Two to five years experience and/or training in horticulture, aboriculture, and knowledge of plant processes – Degree and/or certification in horticulture or a related field preferred
• Excellent time management and organization skills with a high attention to details
• Proven management and leadership skills – nursery management experience a plus
• Commitment to the mission of the Texas Trees Foundation
• Ability to perform physical activities that require lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, where the activities often require considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of containerized trees, machinery, and tools.
• Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds
• Knowledge of machinery operation and repair, including tractors, tools, chippers, and other nursery farm equipment
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
• Ability to identify and coach to improve developmental needs of nursery staff
• Ability to encourage, motivate, and build effective teams, creating mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members
• Ability to run, maneuver, navigate, or drive vehicles and other mechanized equipment needed in day-to-day nursery operations
• Experience overseeing accounting and budgeting operations.
• Good computer skills and the ability to develop and provide reports in Microsoft Office products.
• Demonstrated ability to provide leadership needed to develop quality, integrated teams.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability and willingness to work flexible schedules, including weekend volunteer or other events as required
