foodwatershelter inc is a young, dynamic NFP making a spectacular difference to the lives of vulnerable women and children in Tanzania, East Africa. We are currently seeking an experienced Nurse to join our overseas volunteer team.
Position Purpose/ Role description
This exciting and important Tanzanian-based position with {fws} requires a Registered Nurse to facilitate an optimal standard of health and wellbeing for the vulnerable women, their children and orphaned children who reside at Kesho Leo children’s village. Two main components of the Kesho Leo community health program make this possible; health education and provision of health care through the Kesho Leo community health clinic.
{fws} has a unique opportunity to offer consistent and personalised health care, support, empathy and to ultimately protect and promote the health of all residents of Kesho Leo. In time this healthcare will also be accessible to the wider Kesho Leo community; workers and their families, neighbours and those who attend other Kesho Leo programs such as chekachea (kindergarten) and afternoon tuition. The education component will be available to the wider community of Sinoni.
In addition to becoming an integral part of the Kesho Leo Community Health Program you will also be helping to promote a standard for other NGOs endeavouring to implement achievable and ongoing programs of support for vulnerable women, children and local communities.
Responsibilities
• Manage Kesho Leo community health program; including community health clinic and education program.
• Provide basic health care (first aid, treatment and advice as required, update health histories as required) initially for Kesho Leo House Mamas and children at Kesho Leo and in time to the wider Kesho Leo community; workers and their families, neighbours and children attending Kesho Leo programs such as chekachea.
• Provide support to House Mamas and children and members of Kesho Leo community during times of illness; during hospitalization and provide follow-up care.
• Develop/ Review guidelines for appropriate referral to various health facilities in Arusha; including contact details and specialists available.
• Respect and work towards {fws} policy of inclusion for children of all abilities. Liaise with education and social welfare program to best support children with special needs.
• Provide basic health care for volunteers (first aid, treatment and advice as required, accident and illness reporting as necessary).
• Initiate and direct community health education sessions; to be conducted at Kesho Leo community education building.
• Provide comprehensive health education classes for Kesho Leo House Mamas.
• Develop program of disseminating health related information to the wider community.
• Assist in the sourcing of funds for Kesho Leo Health Program, via the {fws} grants team and {fws} program manager.
• Fit out clinic with equipment and supplies if not already achieved and develop stock inventory process.
• Develop stock inventory for volunteer village health post.
• Liaise with Tanzanian Ministry of Health to learn more about various policies and procedures such as regulations for the development and registration of health facility.
• Network, research and liaise with community organisations and health facilities in Arusha area. For instance begin communication with Sinon Dispensary to investigate ways that {fws} may be able to support this service.
• Source medical supplies in accordance with good practices in hygiene, waste minimization, re-use and recycling when safe to do so, energy efficiency and waste disposal.
• Assist in Human Resources; source full-time Kesho Leo Nursing staff where required. Co-ordinate the visits to Kesho Leo community health clinic; made by medical professionals from Tanzania or Australia who will provide health assessments, treatment and advice.
• Collaborate with the local {fws} management team and volunteers.
• Formulate/ Review Health Policy and Procedures for volunteer site and Kesho Leo Children’s Village.
Time
Full time (mostly Monday-Friday; however may include additional time facilitating community education, one Saturday every second month and also some on-call nursing after hours)
Term
13-month posting (December 2009 - January 2010) including a one month hand over period

| Capacités Requises: |
• Experience in Paediatric nursing, midwifery and/or education desirable.
• Some experience with HIV and/or tropical medicine an advantage.
• Conscientious, fair, reliable, honest and trustworthy.
• Motivated, interested and with the ability to learn new skills.
• Highly value the importance of confidentiality.
• Committed to achieving goals in timely manner.
• Able to gain the respect and teach Kesho Leo residents, fellow staff and community members.
• Work well as a member of a team.
• Have an understanding of the various areas of fws sustainability and fws goals around those.
• Have an understanding of some of the difficulties in accessing health care in developing countries.
• Have basic computer skills; to enable satisfactory health record keeping, making budgets and ordering of medical supplies with use of spreadsheet.
• Must be a motivated, passionate person and someone who can work autonomously as well as maintaining strong communication with the Kesho Leo Manager and the {fws} Management team.
