Duties
On the flat roofs of commercial and industrial buildings under construction, roofers:
put a layer of vapour barrier or insulation on the roof deck
make the surface watertight by spreading hot bitumen (a tar-like substance) over and under layers of roofing felt (fabric soaked in bitumen) or by applying single-ply membranes of waterproof rubber or thermoplastic compounds
install metal or membrane flashing (strips) to protect the edges of roofing materials.
• More than 3 years of Journeyman level experience or higher
• Ability to lift 75 lbs.
• Install, repair or replace two-ply roofing systems using waterproof sheet materials such as modified plastics, elastomeric or other asphaltic compositions.
• Install sheet metal flashings.
• Install sheet metal flashings
• Ability to work and communicate with others
• Must have extensive experience working with S.B.S. torch-on membrane.
• Ability to install all kinds of built up roofing systems
• Ability to instruct apprentices and new workers
• Ability to work at heights
• Ability to learn and obey our extensive company safety policy
• Ability to install roof related sheet metal flashings
Roofers also may:
inspect problem roofs to determine the best procedures for repairing them
estimate material
Working Conditions
Roofers work outdoors on roofs of varying heights. When the weather is good and there is a lot of building activity, roofers may work a considerable amount of overtime. There are physical risks associated with working at heights and with hazardous, hot materials.
Roofers may be required to lift items that weight over 20 kilograms. The heat can be intense for those working with hot bitumen in the summer.
After six months of employment, we offer an extended health and dental plan. A company pension plan is available after one year of employment. Opportunities are available for advancement in the company.
