Profile
An experienced and confident designer required to lead aspects of design, oversee the production and ensure high quality of items is maintained.
Design skills
Forward thinking and conceptual – Ability to understand trends in the UK market.
Able to generate ideas and designs both independently and with direction from the lead designer. Very important that the designer can independently propose and recommend fabric type and patterns based on availability in the market.
Able to create items of clothing from sketches, samples and photographic pictures.
Good drawing skills to communicate designs – Both sketched and through computer aided programs to create technical specs.
Identify, suggest and source fabric and accessory items for clothing according to each individual design i.e. buttons, zip, beading and embroidery patterns
A strong understanding of fabric availability in the market and the ability to confidently propose changes in designs such as alterations in design and fabric type.
Garment technology
Generate Technical Specs/Drawings using computing software.
Ability to cut patterns independently and also work as a team with the pattern cutter to ensure the quality of the design is met.
Ability to independently grade sizes for various designs. If for example a size 8 design is produced, the designer would be required to independently create technical specs for the following sizes 6-14. The designer may also be required to create template sizes that are unique to the company.
Essential skills needed to recommend and sense check all fabrics produced for each design to ensure that they work with the garment construction and final desired overall high quality finish and look.
Ensure that accessory items e.g. buttons, zips, bust pads embroidery work with the garment construction and final desired quality finish

Suppliers
Source suppliers and manufacturers for good quality materials inc fabric, buttons, zips, buttons, thread, beading, embroidery etc that will help deliver a quality finish product. A strong understanding of the market and items available is essential for this role.
Work flow
Ability to work within tight deadlines and overlook production by sample makers to ensure garments are delivered to specified deadlines and are of the required high finished quality.
Designer will also be responsible for vetting the fabrics products prior to shipping.
This role requires a strong enthusiastic leader to overlook and mentor the sample makers/operators to ensure the quality for all items are met.
