As an American student, I have been continually learning about the vastness of culture and language which exist and have existed on our planet. Whether studying about ancient South American civilizations, or learning about modern day European values, my study of Anthropology has increased my interest in foreign culture and the languages used. In my study of culture, I have myself studied German as a foreign language. Having studied foreign languages, I understand both the intrigue and complexity of coming in contact with new sounds and words. I am eager to work as an English teacher to give students the same opportunity I had in learning a foreign language. As a teacher of English in Germany, I will rely on the strategies I used to acquire foreign languages in helping students retain vocabulary and understand grammatical structures.
As today’s economy and marketplace become increasingly multicultural, the effects of language and its impacts on the global economy are growing. I understand that most Germans learn basic English when they are in school, and that they often want to continue learning for business or international relations. I have learned the importance of foreign relations and of foreign language in facilitating communication between different countries, and I want to grow the links within our multicultural world. During my time in high school and college, I studied Spanish and German and enjoyed the acquisition process of language. Studying these languages has been a real opportunity to expand my view of the world and culture, and I have also come to understand the challenges that come with acquiring a new language. As an English teacher, I hope to expand my students’ view of the world. Whether students are learning English for business, or just grasping the fundamentals, their progression in the language will be my top priority.
As a high school student, I tutored third and fourth grade students in reading and writing and worked one on one with them to improve grades and homework skills. I have always enjoyed teaching and enjoy being part of the learning process. In college, I took two years worth of German language classes and have practiced speaking it with German exchange students. From my experience learning foreign language, I have gained a more technical understanding of my own native language. I will work one-on-one with students when necessary in ensuring that they are progressing at a rate which meets class standards. I will my love of teaching with me as I set out on this journey, and I hope to work in ways which will positively impact students in their quest of learning about foreign language.
Objectives
It is my desire to teach English abroad in Germany to give students the same opportunity I had in learning a foreign language. I hope to aid German speaking students seeking to expand their horizons and career opportunities. I also desire to be a teacher that motivates and supports students in their learning.
