| 1996
Over the last eight years, EQHO Communications has grown into a global provider of language, development, localization and publishing services. Today, we have two international sales offices supported by one production center. We have doubled our revenues each year, and now have a full-time staff of 80, complimented by a network of over 1,500 subject-specialist linguists. But in 1996 it was an entirely different story when EQHO began life under a different name, and with a slightly different focus.
This was when Conor Bracken, EQHO’s founder, established a company called Translation Express in Bangkok, Thailand. Translation Express provided English and Thai language services to joint ventures in Thailand as well as multi-nationals doing business in the Kingdom. From this humble beginning, a two-man operation with a small pool of freelance translators, the company’s core focus was still production.
1997-1999
Translation Express grew healthily during the Asian economic meltdown in late 1997, to 22 full-time staff as well as an expanded network of freelance translators. During this time, the then little-known Internet was gaining mainstream commercial acceptance, thus presenting new opportunities for the company to promote its services to larger localization firms across the globe. By the end of 1998 Translation Express was sub-contracting for around 100 localization firms from Asia, Europe and the US.
After another name-change to OnLynx Solutions and a steady expansion of full-time staff, by 1999 we had quadrupled our revenues and recruited more than 250 localization firms that sub-contracted work to us. During this time, our reputation as a dependable supplier which could overcome many technical challenges was beginning to gain momentum. By now, we had evaluated and recruited external subject-specialists and in-house Editors to provide Thai, Simplified Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean language combinations.
2000
Although our focus was still on sub-contract work from other localization firms, we secured long-term contracts with local Thai clients such as IBM Thailand, Pfizer and Honda. A third name-change took place in 2000, when OnLynx Solutions became QTranslation.
Our service offerings continued to expand in order to cater to the needs of this small, but growing list of direct clients. Software testing and multi-lingual printing were added to the mix in late-2000.
2001
In 2001 we opened our European production center in Alicante, Spain, so in addition to Asian languages, we were now also providing major European languages.
By now more clients such as Hewlett Packard and Microsoft were using our services directly as opposed to being sub-contracted to us.
So how did EQHO continue to evolve into the global provider of services that we are today?
