| The Great Basin Institute is an interdisciplinary field studies organization that promotes environmental research, education, and conservation throughout the inner-mountain west, with special emphasis on the Great Basin and Mojave Deserts, as well as the Lake Tahoe Basin. The Institute advances ecological literacy and habitat restoration through educational outreach and its direct service programs.
The Nevada Conservation Corps, a federally-funded AmeriCorps program, harnesses the energy and idealism of youth to meet the needs of Nevada public lands and communities. By uniting environmental resources from federal, state and county agencies, the NCC provides students and young professionals opportunities to make meaningful contributions toward protecting and conserving Nevada’s natural heritage, while also gaining valuable work experience in the natural resource management field.
Since its inception in 2003, the International Conservation Volunteer Exchange has attracted over 250 students and young professionals from 40 countries worldwide to serve on conservation and restoration projects throughout Nevada. Volunteers work alongside Nevada Conservation Corps members on conservation projects throughout Nevada and the Lake Tahoe Basin.
The Research Associate program provides research opportunities for recent college graduates, graduate students, or experienced professionals looking to begin or enhance a career in environmental management, conservation, stewardship, and related fields. Research efforts are focused on conservation and management opportunities including forest surveys, environmental documentation, cultural surveys, trail layout and design, mapping exotic species, inventorying plant communities, conducting recreational use surveys, wildlife monitoring, as well as monitoring and evaluating restoration initiatives.
The Great Basin Naturalists believe that the conviction to protect and conserve the environment springs from love. To love the natural world one must know it, its nooks and crannies, its faces from sunrise to sunrise, its seasons and patterns and creatures. Our programs empower youth to take part in hands-on conservation and restoration projects. We focus on experiential learning and community service so that participants learn by doing. By supporting today's youth naturalists we're investing in tomorrow's conservation leaders.
