Chief Officer
Position Purpose
Second in command of vessel.
To keep a watch as senior deck officer.
Safety officer
Officer responsible for cargo work and stability.
Dimensions
Number of employees under normal supervision: 8
Liase with shore personnel during all aspects of cargo operations.
Liase with surveyors during audits, surveys, inspections etc.
Nature And Scope
To maintain the watertight integrity of the vessel.
Act as the ship’s safety officer and chair the safety committee meetings.
Ensure all ship’s staff have and wear personal protective equipment.
Responsible to the Master for ship stability and stress calculations.
Carry out all aspects of cargo handling under the direction of the Master.
Properly maintain the deck log book, ballast record and garbage record book.
Deck department maintenance planned with, and issued by the Chief Engineer.
Manage the cosmetic appearance of the vessel.
Work closely with the Chief Engineer to ensure the most efficient use of manpower.
Ensure the adequate provision of fresh water on board.
Understudy the Master as senior deck officer.
Keep within budgets set for the deck department.
Inventory control of deck department stores.
Ensure a constant state of readiness of the ships boats.
Awareness of performer roles in SMS.
Awareness of responsibilities and duties as per ISPS Code and Ship Security plan.
Principal Accountabilities
Safety of personnel on board.
Effective and safe navigation of the vessel.
Proper stability of the vessel at all times
Efficient and safe cargo loading and discharging.
Operation of deck department within budget.
Ability to:
Generate good teamwork environment
Problem solve in a clear and communicative manner.
Special Requirements:
Awareness of Bridge Resource Management techniques.
Fully understand and apply Origins OH&S policy
Adhere to the Drug and Alcohol policy for Origin ship’s.
Comply with Origin Smoking Directive and shipboard smoking rules.

Experience/Background
Minimum four years experience as deck officer on a LPG ship.
Qualifications
Class II Chief Officer. Stcw’95
Gmdss certificate
Gas Tanker Safety Certificate endorsed on Home Certificate.
Vanuatu Chief Officer Certificate of recognition License
Vanuatu Seamans ID book
Vanuatu General Operators License
Valid medical certificate.
Skills/Competencies Required
