Job Description
Paid, full-time, 12-month duration with possible extensions.
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is responsible for the stewardship of marine mammals and other living marine resources as mandated pursuant to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), Endangered Species Act (ESA), and the Magnuson-Stevens Act.
The ESA requires federal agencies to conserve each endangered species by acting to prevent further decline of the species, facilitate an increase in its population, and improve the quality of its habitat. The ESA requires development and implementation of a Recovery Plan to promote the conservation of each endangered species. NMFS published the Recovery Plans for humpback and right whales in 1991 and further revised the right whale recovery plan in 2005. Both recovery plans give high priority to the problem of mortality of animals due to entanglements in commercial fishing gear. This priority has been reinforced in the NMFS/Northeast Region by the Northeast Right Whale Recovery Plan Implementation Team (NEIT) and the Atlantic Large Whale Take Reduction Team (TRT), which was formed in 1996 pursuant to the 1994 amendments to the MMPA.
The internship is to assist the Large Whale Disentanglement Program Coordinator with oversight and expansion of components of the program. Specific projects will include:
• Design and implementation of a website to archive and display large whale entanglement data. The website should be a user interface allowing for querying and geographic display of data.
• Database architecture and design with multiple security layers for various levels of user access. The database can be integrated with a back-end database displaying to a front-end website interface.
• Receiving, processing, displaying and archiving of telemetry data generated by tagged entangled large whales. A web-based system to process and display the tag generated data in near real-time will be developed and if feasible, be integrated into the above mentioned database and website.
