Area of Social Work: Child Services Development/ Social Inclusion
Host Organization : Highschool Support Ngo (*)
This non profitable and non governmental organization, that works to fight against school drop-outs in impoverished neighborhoods (villas, in Spanish) in Buenos Aires.
Once teenagers drop out of school, most probable thing is that they will never finish it later in their lives. That´s why some NGO´s have been working on this problem with a final mission ahead: social inclusion. Education is next generations only chance to have a different life from the one that their parents did.
Working side to side with the teenager´s schools, this NGO has improved in the past years the education possibilities of lots of kids from poor and excluded areas of the city.
Their work system is based on two buildings:
- an office from where they administrate funding, human resources, donations, etc.
- a communitary center in the villa, run by professional staff from the NGO, where volunteers teach school support classes face to face to their students.
The center also functions as social and emotional support to these teenagers. It´s very common for parents to work all day and leave the oldest child in charge of his siblings. That makes it impossible for them to study, that´s why some volunteers look after the younger brothers and sisters while the student takes his class.
The center always needs more people to help with the classes. As they are not formal classes at a school, there is no need for the teacher to be a professional in the class he/she is teaching. The main idea is that the volunteer spends time with each student helping him/her to understand what the school teacher has taught in class.
Volunteers also help the NGO with the fundraising, and food distribution on the center.
