Host Organization : computer recycle project in a men´s prison (*)
This is an organization that works upon the inclusion of convicts in educational and work programs.
Their office is located in Recoleta, next to Retiro bus station, where the staff works in the administration and computer recycling.
This organization is run by the founder-director-, and works with volunteers and ex convicts, who started working with them in jail and continued after they came out, finding in this project a new way of life.
Every Friday, volunteers and staff go to one prison in the suburbs of Buenos Aires and work in three different workshops with the convicts:
- Computer science workshop: convicts that have already learnt at this workshop, teach how computer systems work to the new participants. This workshop is similar to a class or course to become a computer technician.
- Computer recycling workshop: the organization receives, as a donation, company´s old computers, that will be taken to pieces in this workshop. Technicians that have finished the first workshop, will recycle these equipments building new and better computers that will be afterwards donated to schools from all around the country.
- Judicial workshop: convicts can consult their legal doubts, do research, study former cases that might help answering their actual questions.
The main idea is to give these men the possibility of doing something productive while they are in jail. By becoming computer technicians, they get a very useful working tool which could be a door out of unemployment and poverty when they come out.
Volunteers can work in the projects that the organization is already developing, or they can also develop their own projects. A possibility for this could be teaching a special class of an artistic skill that the volunteer has, or even a more academic course, such as literature, philosophy, etc.
