Area of Social Work: Community Health
Host Organization : Public Hospital In Buenos Aires (*)
This Hospital is the most important one in Argentina and it is one of the best public hospitals in Latin America. Is managed by an important public University, working as well as a school hospital. Is located in Barrio Norte, one of the nicest neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, close to the subway and lots of buses lines.
The UBA is a big political institution that runs and administrates the public university, research and scientific investigation centers, health insurance for it employees and this Hospital. This means that UBA is an important part of argentine politics, and suffers the same kind of problems that the others public institutions: corruption, lack of resources, disorganization.
The hospital has lots of needs as the resources that it gets from the government are not enough. There is often a lack of medicine, doctors or nurses to take proper care of patients.
Volunteers are very important in that matter, as their dedication can improve a person´s time in the hospital. The hospital has eight groups of volunteers working each one in a different area (medical specialty). Each group has it´s own coordinator, who makes sure every volunteer works where he or she is supposed and helps them with anything they might need during their ship.
While volunteering at the Hospital you will be working among patients, doctors, residents, nurses, med-students, and other volunteers, argentinians and foreigners.
Volunteers are not allowed to give any medication to a patient or make any kind of decision about their medical treatment.
