Assistant Specialist (Sustainable & Organic Farming Systems), position number 82598, UHM C of Trop
Agr & Human Res, (Manoa), Tropical Plant & Soil Sciences, 11 month, tenure track, to begin approximately
January 2009. Duties: Provide interactive and cooperative leadership in working with research faculty and
extension specialists and agents to plan, coordinate and deliver an integrated statewide educational and
extension program related to sustainable and organic farming systems and their economic viability; develop
strong positive relationship with the industry, including conducting educational sessions for the industry and
their organizations; collaborate, advise and train County Agents; and prepare publications on sustainable and
organic farming systems practices. Develop an extramurally-funded research program that emphasizes
sustainable and organic farming systems research to achieve high productivity, high production stability,
environmental resiliency and profitability. The research should integrate ecology and soil quality with crop
production, physiology, biochemistry and other branches of applied agricultural biosciences to solve the
problems of high-value crop growers in sustainable systems, developing recommendations for the selection of
germplasm for high performance in low input systems and establish recommendations for newly available
products for pest and fertility management in sustainable agricultural systems. The successful candidate is
expected to obtain local, regional and national grants to establish an internationally recognized extension and
research program. Teach a lower division non-major course on herbs in alternate years and a lower division
laboratory/lecture course on sustainable and organic farming each academic year, an upper division course in
vegetable production in alternate year, and to develop and teach an alternate year course at the graduate level on
Integrated Crop Management. |
| Habilidades: |
Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. degree is required in Crop Science,
Agronomy, Horticulture, Soil Science or other agriculture-related field. At least three (3) years of experience in
research and teaching in sustainable/organic agricultural production at the next lower rank or its equivalent.
Research training that integrates soil science, crop production, physiology, ecology and quality of tropical
crops. Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to interact amicably with diverse industry and
academic colleagues. Desirable qualifications: Practical field and laboratory experience in sustainable and
organic farming systems research of annual and perennial crops, especially vegetables. Familiarity with USDA
National Organic Standard. Demonstrated ability to publish research results. Demonstrated ability to work with
undergraduate and graduate students, and with diverse individuals and groups within Hawaii’s agricultural
community. |
