Position: Analytical Chemist
Reports to: Laboratory Manager
Purpose
To provide accurate and precise chemical analyses at Greenville Metals, Inc. as necessary to support the business activities.
Scope
Analyses performed will include in-process, control and final sample determinations for melting and/or processing, a variety of incoming materials, outside analytical customer samples, and environmental analyses as required to meet the business, corporate, and EPA requirements. The objective is to provide timely, cost effective, and accurate analytical results using established or developmental procedures. In general, sample condition upon receipt is not the responsibility of the analyst. The analyst is responsible for sample preparation, analysis/determination, calculation and reporting of accurate, quality results. The position has no budget responsibility.
Responsibilities and Duties
General:
1. Follow all safety procedures within the laboratory and plant operations at all times.
2. Perform other job functions as assigned by Lab Manager.
3. Maintain a clean and organized workspace.
4. Effective and professionally communicate all aspects of laboratory functions, both internally and externally.
5. Effectively troubleshoot and perform preventive maintenance for all laboratory equipment to minimize instrument downtime and its impact on production.
6. Maintain logbooks, documentation, and appropriate computer backup.
7. Maintain consumable stock levels to ensure continual operation in the laboratory at all times.
8. Assist with method and product development and instrument calibration to support analyses.
9. Maintain received and prepared samples in an organized manner for future reference.
Sample/Reagent/Standard Preparation:
1. Perform appropriate preparation and dissolution of all samples received at the laboratory including incoming materials, in-process and control samples, final products, outside analytical customer samples, etc.
2. Prepare and utilize all necessary blanks, reagents, and standards for AA and ICP requirements.
3. Prepare samples and standards for C/S and gas determinations.
4. Prepare samples and standards for XRF analyses.
Analysis:
1. Perform chemical analysis by XRF.
2. Perform chemical analysis by reference methods and required.
3. Perform gas and carbon/sulfur analyses by Leco analyzers.
4. Perform chemical analysis by AA.
5. Perform chemical analysis by ICP.
6. Perform sizing analysis by Malvern.
7. Perform sizing analysis by Coulter.
8. Perform all non-chemical property testing of powder materials.
Calculations:
1. Calculate percent compositions for various reference procedures performed in the laboratory.
2. Calculate percent compositions from instrument calibration curves for various types of instrumentation.
3. Calculate chemical concentrations of standards, reagents, etc.
Report of Results:
1. Perform manual reporting of analytical results when required.
2. Perform data entry into any of the electronic means utilized by GMI, including Excel spreadsheets, Access and/or Lotus databases or the Glovia system.
3. Prepare computer-generated certificates of analysis either manually or through the Glovia system.
Education, Experience, and Skills

Education:
B.S. in chemistry or related science preferred
A.S. in chemistry accepted with at least three years of prior laboratory experience
Experience:
Three years in an industrial or commercial laboratory preferred
Skills:
Excellent communication skills required
PC computer skills required, including Microsoft Office suite
Windows knowledge
