Community Development Internship
Unpaid Internship-College/University Course Credit and Low Cost Housing Available
Purpose Of Position:
Intern performs a variety of complex technical activities to assist and support staff in the Planning Division within the Community Development Department.
Essential Functions:
Intern will complete office and fieldwork projects in one or more of the following areas:
Economic Development:
Downtown Urban Renewal Data Baseline Survey: Survey of Downtown Urban Renewal District mapping land uses, vacancy rates, building inventory and opportunity sites. Opportunity to interface with GIS data layers and business development services.
Business Development Services: Intern will staff downtown merchants association to position it for an Oregon Main Street Application – Exploring Program. Intern will work with downtown businesses and the City of Redmond and prepare the initial application process for Redmond to apply for the Oregon Main Street program.
Planning:
Redmond Development Code Clean-Up: Review of development code for ordinance notes and compliance.
Development of a Beautification Program: Review Redmond Development Code and City Programs to develop a draft Beautification Program for consideration.

Historic Preservation:
Survey and Review of Historic Downtown Core for National Register of Historic Places Historic District – Intern will design and conduct a survey of the Redmond downtown core. Depending on the results of the survey and time limitations, the intern might start the process of registering the area as a National Historic District.
Historic Preservation Plan for the City of Redmond – Intern will develop a historic preservation plan using the principles and concepts learned in the classroom.
Other Projects might include:
Web-Site Development:
Web-page development for links to the City of Redmond website for the following programs: Urban Renewal Agency, Enterprise Zone, Public Art
Grant Writing:
Comprehensive review of Community Development grant programs that are applicable to the City of Redmond. Development of one grant proposal for a viable project supported by the City of Redmond.
Public Art:
Development of a Rotating Public Art Gallery for installation in 2010. Works with the Redmond Commission for Art in Public Places to design a downtown Rotating Public Art Gallery to be installed in 2010.
Other duties as assigned

Qualification Requirements
Mandatory Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent; Current undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Planning, GIS, Public Administration, or Historic Preservation. Fundamental knowledge of planning concepts and practices. Computer skills using word processing, mapping, graphic, and presentation software. Ability to independently research assigned problems; organize material from various sources into a format of own, or specific design; handle complaints and problems courteously; work effectively under close time lines.
Special Requirements/Licenses:
Possession of, or required to obtain a valid Oregon drivers= license within 30 days of hire. Must have a safe driving record. |
