Cover Letter Tips, Writing Good Cover Letters |
The importance of a quality cover letter cannot be
understated. As the first thing the employer reads, your cover letter must create a good first impression. It is your chance
to convince the employer that you have the skills and qualifications
required and have an interesting resume that is worth reading.
1. The cover letter must be tailor made to each job
opportunity and individual company. It personalizes your approach to
companies. It is important to spend time making sure your cover
letter is relevant to the recipient. Make use of the company website,
the job advertisement, trade journals, newspapers and any other resources to
obtain relevant information about the company or organization you are applying to.
2. Address the letter to the particular person/careers
department stated on the advertisement. Refer to the advertisement or say how
you heard about the vacancy.
3. Say why you want the job and what attracts you to the
company (you don't have the opportunity to say this on your resume). It
helps that the employer knows what motivates you, and it is a chance to
show that you have done some research into the company. Relate the
letter to the specific needs of the company.
4. Highlight your key strengths, in a concise sales
paragraph (sell yourself!). Highlight particular skills in your resume of
relevance, ensuring they match up to the requirements of the position.
5. End on an optimistic note, mentioning your
availability for interview.
6. As with your resume, the cover letter should be brief (no more
than one A4 side), relevant and easy to read, with the spelling and
grammar carefully checked.
7. Try to ensure the cover letter is on good quality paper
(not coloured). When sending via email, as with resumes, it's important to
send the covering letter as an attachment rather than in the body of the
email.
8. You can also use the cover letter to provide brief
background details regarding your current situation: eg the
circumstances of redundancy or a career break.
