In September of 2010, I enrolled at the International Hotel Management College for the Executive Hotel Management Diploma Program. This entails a 36 week program in the city of Vancouver; and is made of two components. The first component being focused on the theoretical side of hospitality consisting of twelve courses and the other being a practical side consisting of practicums which students gain experience by working at various hospitality establishments. Vancouver itself is a wonderful city, filled with many ethnic restaurants, chic boutique hotels, museums, art galleries, and has many activities ranging from biking, rollerblading, eco-tours, golf, skiing, watersports, and whale watching. The lecturers at IHMC are well experienced in the hospitality industry and they are very helpful and friendly. The practicums that I encountered were exciting and gave me first hand experience at understanding the hospitality industry.

Just a few words about my current job. As a Tour/Cruise Manager I am responsible for the smooth operations of all the off-board and some of the on-board activities of our passengers. Accuracy in dealing with booking numbers and punctuality are of crucial importance. I consider my job a traveling version of a hotel concierge. I have to be knowledgeable about all the local suppliers and many other aspects of the towns that we visit in Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary. Both on board of a cruise ship and in a land hotel, my previous education and work history in hospitality makes cooperation with the hotel personel a lot easier and smoother. So thank you guys at IHMC. My time at IHMC was of the best year of my life.

Right after I graduated, I worked at the lounge of "Hotel Seiyo Ginza" in Ginza, Tokyo for 2 years. Then I changed the hotel to "Tobu Hotel Levant Tokyo" in Kinshicyo, Tokyo. This Tobu Hotel is not a luxury hotel like Seiyo Ginza, but what I'm doing here is a lot more difficult and interesting. At the beginning, I wanted to work in first class hotels with best quality service, but now I realized that where I work in not as important as what I actually do in that hotel. Anyway, I am still learning so many things everyday :-)

I am currently employed with the Travelodge Hotel & Conference Centre Regina as the Group Sales & Reservations Manager. I left my Catering position to be a Manager-In-Training with the Sandman Hotel, Suites & Spa Regina, following that I worked for my family's transport company for a short period of time, and then returned to the Travelodge. The job is great, I oversee Group Sales, Reservations & Switchboard. The hotel has a great reputation in Regina and I work with a great team. Please say hello to everyone at IHMC.

All I can say is that it was a great memorable experience. During this time in such a beautiful city I had the chance to learn and live the Hospitality Industry. In classes where as an international student that I was, I was welcome and made felt as in home, I made lots of Canadian and international friends from Switzerland, Russia and Hong Kong only to mention some, this enriched my experience and made classes more enjoyable.
As for the teachers and IHMC staff, they were very supportive; they all have walked a long path in the hospitality industry and always had a smile to assist you.
One more thing that made special this program is the practicum experienced that I had at a great hotel, which as a student I had the chance to work in different departments, met great people and made connections in the hospitality world. This allowed me to know more clearly in what kind of property and department I would like to work.
