Homelife:
Middle School is an ideal time for some students to experience a 5-day or 7-day boarding school. At Fox River Country Day School our boarding students (Grades 5-8) receive love and attention from a team of talented, dedicated adults who help students thrive in a happy, structured atmosphere conducive to personal growth. Our program offers an opportunity for learning in a setting uniquely designed to support independence and academic progress.
Academic Focus:
Each week night includes a formal study hall, when students work independently on a variety of assignments and projects. The residential staff is always available to offer individualized support when needed. The staff main
tains regular and ongoing contact with teachers as well as parents, in order to assure each student’s academic needs are being met. In addition to study hall in the dorm, we take research trips to the excellent local public library. Students experience a combination of challenging academics and one-on-one support.
The Weekend Program and Host Families:
Local 5-day boarding students return home on most weekends to enjoy time with family and friends. 7-day boarding students are carefully placed with local host families for home-stay experiences about one weekend a month and occasionally for extended holidays. The host-family placements are particularly helpful in offering a local sense of family and community for middle school students who may be a long way from home. International students find the weekend home stays particularly beneficial as part of their conversational English language development.
When students are on campus for the weekend they have a rel
axed schedule of free time and organized activities, which vary greatly. Just a few examples: movies, apple picking, a ski trip, horseback riding, or a concert.
Building Character:
Middle School boarding students are making a gradual transition from childhood to young adulthood. In the context of a nurturing, supportive atmosphere, they are given appropriate responsibilities and are encouraged to move towards independence. Students develop a commitment to community living and the qualities that make communities work, such as respect, cooperation, and kindness. Conversations about ethics and values are common, as students ponder how to express their best selves.
Each student is treated as a capable individual and a vital member of the dorm community. The residential staff nurtures these values through positive role modeling, respectful counseling, and genuine embracing of individuality. Our students feel safe to learn and grow.
Athletics:
Here at Fox River Country Day School we believe that athletics are a key part of educating the whole child. It is our goal to teach our students not only how to play a sport, but to include valuable lessons of sportsmanship, work ethic, and integrity. Our curriculum is designed to build fundamental skills as well as to introduce our students to the joys and benefits of a healthy, active life. We encourage each child to do his or her best in every activity, and we give them opportunities to put what they have learned to the test.
