Bachelor of Commerce
The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree programme enables each student to develop his or her own interests in business and related subjects. Students are able to create individualised courses using a range of papers offered across teaching departments in the School of Business and University as a whole. Students have the flexibility within the BCom degree to combine two specialisations and graduate with a double major. Students may be invited to participate in the Honours degree programme based on their academic performance at the end of their second or third year of study for the BCom degree.
For a Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree you must major in at least one of the following subjects: Accounting; Economics; Economics and Statistics; Finance; Information Science; International Business; Management; Marketing Management; Tourism
Tourism
The Bachelor of Tourism degree explores tourism, its effects, and on-going management at destination and business levels in New Zealand and internationally, preparing students for careers in the industry. Students are encouraged to take papers in other fields such as Commerce (e.g. Accounting, Information Science, Management, and Marketing Management) or Humanities (e.g. Economics, Languages, Māori Studies) depending on their interests and their intended career destination. The BTour degree has a strong business emphasis with attention also paid to the ethical, cultural, and environmental dimensions of tourism.
Commerce with Honours
The Bachelor of Commerce with Honours (BCom(Hons)) degree is an undergraduate programme which can be taken by meritorious students. The degree involves four years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time study). Students are typically invited to study at the Honours level by the Head of Department in the second or third year of study. The degree incorporates an additional year of intensive study, culminating with the completion of a research dissertation.
Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce
The Postgraduate Diploma in Commerce (PGDipCom) is a one-year paper- or dissertation-based programme, and is designed for graduates seeking to enhance their undergraduate degree and career prospects. Its status is similar to that of the Bachelor of Commerce with Honours (BCom(Hons)) degree, and it may be awarded with distinction or credit. It also comprises the first year of the Master of Commerce (MCom) degree.
The PGDipCom programme normally contains the papers required for the fourth year of the Honours programme in the subject concerned. Applicants must hold a Bachelor's degree in the subject concerned, and have achieved appropriate grades.
Master of Business Administration
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree is a 16-month full-time programme with a strong focus on managerial relevance, practical application, and personal development. The MBA curriculum is structured to provide a broad foundation across all aspects of the external business environment, which is then built upon through courses in the functional areas of management and strategy, progressing from the external to the internal environment. Critical thinking and decision-making tools and techniques are developed and applied throughout. Wide use is made of practitioners and leaders from within the business community for both teaching and mentoring. The small class size (25 maximum) ensures a large degree of personal mentoring and guidance from staff.
The style of learning is highly interactive, and participants learn as much from one another as from the course leader or facilitator. Students are assigned to teams, which reflect the diversity of professional and educational backgrounds, demographics and work style preferences. These teams work together on projects, presentations, and assignments and learn to understand better their own and other team members' strengths and weaknesses as well as honing skills such as conflict resolution and problem solving.
Other Courses available: Graduate Diploma in Tourism, Master of Commerce, Business, Tourism, Entrepreneurship, Diploma of Business Administration and the Doctor of Philosophy.
