Situated in a very safe and beautiful sea side city looking west at Mt. Washington resort on Vancouver Island, west of Canada. We are located near a Catholic church, restaurants, 7-11, parks and shopping. Powell River is a beautiful, friendly and safe comunity located in an area that has been inhabited by the Sliammon First Nation for thousands of years and as such, has a rich and vibrant history. the modern town was built around a large paper mill that opened in 1912.
Over 95% of the residents speak English as their first language, and everyone is welcoming of international students. The population is about 21,000 people. Despite its small size, the city is rich in culture and was named as the Cultural Capital of Canada for 2004. Some of the many activities include: "Earth Day" at the Sliammon village, the International Choral Kathaumixw, the subject of a CBC documentary, the Balckberry festival street party, The sunshine Coast Music Festival, Seafair and movies at the Historic Patricia Theatre.
Powell River also has a first-class recreation complex, where you can swim, work out, take aerobics or Tai-boxing classes, or watch the famous Powell River Kings hockey team. International students are also welcome to become members of teh public library, do volunteer work and become real members of the community.
All of this in addition to living in one of the most beautiful places in the world where you can take part in the many outdoor recreational activities. You can go hiking in the magnificent forest and mountains, or try scuba diving, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, snowshoeing, or go whale watching.
